Trump's 'Space Force'

What is Trumps ', Space Force'?

Information from: https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/why-trump-wants-a-space-force-for-the-final-frontier/2019/02/19/aac0b1ee-349d-11e9-8375-e3dcf6b68558_story.html

In my opinion, and research from the Washington DC news clearly shows that Trump wants a new 'Space Force' to help the military. The Washington Post states:

'Satellites make much of modern warfare possible, through GPS systems, wireless communications and sophisticated weather forecasting. This makes them tempting military targets. The U.S. Air Force has been responsible for defending American satellites and spacecraft. President Donald Trump said in 2018 that the perils required a new military branch, an idea that came to be known as the Space Force. The idea was popular with crowds at the president’s rallies, but not with Pentagon officials or many in Congress. After months of debate, Trump signed an order creating a more modest Space Force that would sit within the Air Force, similar to how the Marine Corps sits within the Navy.'

To conclude this question, trump would like a space force to help if in any case, the U.S is going to war or to target other countries.

What would the militant force do?

Washington:

In a report to Congress released in 2018, the Department of Defense laid out a plan to build a new force to defend U.S. interests in space with aggressive offensive capabilities. This would include systems that could “degrade, deny, disrupt, destroy, and manipulate adversary capabilities.” The force would hold joint space training and military exercises with U.S. allies.

In this question, the Washington DC post is trying to say that the bicameral legislature of the federal government of the United States had a plan to create a new militant force to protect the things in space the U.S is investigating and uncovering. Furthermore, this force would have both space training and military exercises' which is not done very often- probably never done before!

Is there a true threat in space?

Yes, but not in the Hollywood sense of alien invaders attacking lower Manhattan. The main threat is the ability to disable or destroy an adversary’s satellites from the ground. In 2007, China first used a ballistic missile to destroy its own old weather satellite orbiting 535 miles (861 km) above Earth; Russia has been testing a missile that could be used to strike and destroy a satellite or ballistic missile. It’s likely that other nations won’t be far behind. If you destroy a spy satellite, the flow of real-time intelligence from a particular spot in China or Iran could stop. A communications satellite that’s jammed from the ground could mean ground troops suddenly find themselves operating blindly. And because existing international treaties governing space are unclear, even civilian satellites could be targeted by nations looking to contain or punish their enemies.

What Do I think on Trumps 'Space Force'

Well, everyone who has been introduced to space topics most likely is talking about Trumps 'Space Force' I put Space Force in apostrophes as he wants to have an unusual force but not many people agree to it. As for my side and opinion, I think it could be either- yes or no. I could agree and see where he is going with this because- yes. I do understand why he wants space force. When I was researching this story, which I did a lot of, I found out that many papers and normally biased papers were all agreeing to each other. Most of them had stated that Donald Trump, President of the United States of America would like to establish a reliable, and honourable militant force, costing about $2 billion for the protection of his country and their allies.

In contrast, I do also believe that there is no point in making an intergalactic space force as it would cost a lot and could potentially leave the country in a huge poverty issue, even though the U.S has about $630 billion (in 2019). I know what you are thinking. $2 billion dollars is not even that much then, then I hope you think about the funding, the training and the exercises equipment they will need. Moreover, imagine a scenario where the US did go to a military fight or to war, do you not think that by the end of the war they could be bankrupt?

Trump’s Space Force is billed as a new branch of the US military and will be used to fight wars in space. The idea is that it would be in place by 2020 and would be used to combat threats from other countries such as Russia and China.

In some ways, I can see why this might be a good idea. Satellites are essential these days for communication and navigation. Countries might target other country’s satellites as a way to seriously hinder their enemy’s ability to communicate. At the moment, there is no way of fighting against this and it is possible that if satellites were destroyed there would be major disruption. Having a space force might be one way of defending from space.

On the other hand, it would be incredibly expensive! The price tag hasn’t even yet been determined. How can you put something like this in place when you don’t know how much it’s going to cost? Wouldn’t this money be better spent defending from threats here on Earth? In addition to this, many people say that it is a threat to global security. Putting weapons and a space force out there could lead other powers to assume that their satellite systems were at risk and could severely damage relationships between countries.

Trump wants the military to become astronauts. In my opinion, Trump is going to spend too much money and he is a dogmatic man he just does not listen. Finally, NASA has not launched a rocket to the moon in years. Elon Musk[the maker of Tesla] has created a rocket called Space X. If you want to launch a rocket to the moon, trust Space X. Also, he has launched a Tesla orbiting the moon. In addition, India has tried to launch a rocket to the moon but it was not successful.

I think that Trump should not build a space force as this appears to be a challenge for other countries to try and make better and more technological machine that has more features. This is one of the main reasons why war is caused. A good thing about this project is that launching a space army would give us experience in future wars.(which I hope don't occur) Launching this can also trigger issues between prime ministers and their countries.

Thank you for hearing me out.

Also it might just be me but he thinking we will ever fight over the moon is also crazy though im still not dening it will never happen but i just dont agree with Trump thinking this is the best million dollar idea but im cant stop him plus even if i had the chance it not like he would listen to a 11 year old girl.

I think this is a fantastic post but a difficult scenario that the USA now finds themselves in. From the research I have made, I have gathered that Trump would like the space force would be used perhaps in wars that are in space. It would also be to appose threats from countries such as China or Russia.

On the one hand, in this day and age, we use satellites a lot as they are vital for navigation and communication across long distances. As they are so important, one could see why they would be a target for enemy countries. For this reason, I can see why Trump would want to protect them.

However, this project could potentially cause a massive financial loss as the end price result will only be released in congress, 2020. With thousand already losing their lives because of this it is certainly a matter of debate. Also, as said by brilliant_blackberry, why put something in place if you are unsure of how much it will cost? Furthermore, would adding all this protection, anger other nations as it may come across as a sign of power or a threat.

In conclusion, I am not 100% sure it is really worth it as there are so many elements that could fail and may cause tensions between other countries but it is still a very complicated issue.

I think that there is no point in having a space force as there is no threats from space ; however there would be a point in having a satellite that can see if there is a threat (like a meteorite)coming towards earth and warn people about it .

My thoughts on Donald Trump and the Space Force is that there is no need for it now. The problem I have with Space Force is that we could be releasing this new Space Force in the future where technology could be a lot developed than it already is now and sending it out next year or whenever Trump has plans to send the Space Force would have a small reason to because they probably don't even know if other countries are in the future going to destroy their satellites. Also even if they know that countries are planning to destroy their satellites they probably wouldn't not have much time to react and could potentially start a war on other countries because of their satellites, which could lead to countries using nuclear weapons and have a big impact on the future causing immense amount of damage to the planet.

I actually think that putting weapons in space is going to be the most terrible idea Trump has had. Firstly, it will affect the USA’s relationships with other countries, and not in a positive way! If I was, for example, the leader of a country that didn’t have wholly positive relationships with the USA, I would immediately feel either suspicious of why he felt the need to introduce a space force or I would feel like he didn’t have trust in my country.

Secondly, it is very expensive and a waste of money. The main reason I can see for having a space force is to protect satellites from being damaged and destroyed by other countries. However, although the United States, Russia, China and India have demonstrated the capacity to destroy satellites, it has never been used in warfare and countries have only ever shot down their own satellites. What’s the point in spending money on something that isn’t actually necessary?

In conclusion, even talking about the possibility of a space force is a negative thing. Trump is pre-empting a type of warfare that is not yet happening and I feel that, actually, by doing this he could encourage other countries to do the same, which might actually lead to war!

I read an article recently about what Norway is planning to do to protect its satellites. Rather than the introduction of a space force, it is going to include anti-jamming and anti-radiation technologies to protect its satellites. In my opinion, this a better idea because it’s far less threatening to other countries plus you don’t have to put people into space which means it would probably be less expensive in the long run.

I think that there is no need, at the present time, for Donald Trump to be creating a ‘Space Force.’ In March this year, the White House asked for $74.2 million dollars to fund the Space Force Headquarters. In my opinion, that’s far too much money to spend when the threat of ‘space terrorism’ or ‘space warfare’ is so low.

Only four countries in the entire world even have the ability to destroy satellites using anti-satellite weapons, and one of those countries is the USA themselves! Can Trump really be saying that he wants to spend $74.2 millions dollars to protect the US from three countries (Russia, India and China)?? If he is worried about war, wouldn’t he be better spending this money on other forms of defence, like the army and the air force?

Another possible reason I can see for Trump being so keen on having a space force is for the USA themselves to be able to use ASATs (anti-satellite missiles) to disrupt other countries communications. I hope that this isn’t the case, because I hate to think about someone deliberately wanting to start a war, but if I can see it as a possibility I am sure that leaders of other countries might see it this way too.

    It is a dangerous thought…

I’m not saying that Trump shouldn’t put money into space at all, just that investing it in a space force is a waste. The threat of war or terrorism here on Earth is, at the moment, far greater than the threat from space so if Trump wants to spend money on defence, he should be spending it here.

Personally, I think that having a military is a waste of money and fuel (greenhouse gases), it would not be good as it may distinguish other country's trust for America as there will be an army in space with weapons even though there was a law made in 1967 which does not allow weapons of mass destruction in space it will still make some world leaders angry that he gets his military in space . Also, Trump could be spending these 2 billion dollars on something else I believe is more important, like free healthcare, climate change, literally anything else that helps the world rather than scaring a lot of countries and protecting us in case of invading aliens. I think Trump also wants this because he will gain a lot of power over other countries having a military in space.
Though on the other hand we might feel a lot safer having a military in safe, protecting us against anything coming our way that might harm us.
I agree with my first paragraph more though as there are more points/reasons to why he should not do this.
Really I think Trump should be worrying about his people of America more than his military being in space as in 2016, 43.1 million people lived in poverty according to the official measure.
