Is space travel more important than climate change?

As many BNC users will know, climate change is probably, if not the, most pressing issue on this planet right now. There are more greenhouse gases in the atmosphere than ever before, causing the earth’s temperature to rise. The burning of fossil fuels, transport emissions and the environmental impact of intensive farming have all resulted in high levels of CO2 in our atmosphere. Scientists say this is the fastest and largest increase in CO2 the world has ever seen.

Space travel, however, is as said by Ray Badbury, " life-enhancing, and anything that's life-enhancing is worth doing. It makes you want to live forever." I believe this is very true as it is amazing to think that it is infinite, forever expanding and anything could be out there. But, as of January 2019, more than 128 million bits of debris smaller than 1 cm and around 34,000 of pieces larger than 10 cm were estimated to be in orbit around the Earth. In this space junk, a chemical called alumina is released. Although, it is only released in small quantities, they are slowly cutting away at our atmosphere's ozone layer which is a massive contribute to climate change. Rockets also release C02, which is also a partaker in global warming, but not a significant amount that would spark concern.

I believe that we should be striving to save our own planet before beginning to discover others as the earth is in such critical condition. I would love to hear what other BNC users think of this and whether you think differently. I can't wait to hear your opinions!
