How are we going to undergo the conditions and time of Space Travel?

What I mean by this is how are we going to sort out how long it takes to get to a planet or, how are we going to face conditions through long distances.

On Monday, we discussed the distance between planets. As the planets got further away from the Sun, the bigger steps we had to take. And since we didn't talk about how long it would take to travel to one of those planets ( also because I knew that the further away, the longer travel e.g Pluto takes 9 years and 5-6 months) it came to my mind.

So what if someone went to Pluto, what would they do in the 9 years and 6 months. Report to Earth? Do daily activities that would be done on Earth? (e.g eat, drink, sleep) There would definitely be some changes with their body too.

It would also take a long time to come back too; probably the same amount of years, it would definitely be a long time before we hear of the astronaut again. It would not take a long time to go to the moon because it is close to Earth and orbits the Sun with us. Every planet orbits the Sun with us in fact!

It is the same with Mars. Mars is usually on our right and as it is close to us, from here to there it wouldn't take long.

So the question I would like to ask is: How are we going to undergo the conditions and time of Space Travel?

I would like to hear your thoughts.

    Personally, I don't think we should go to Pluto as we will most likely die as it is so cold but if we do send someone there then we will have to have a lot of food, to survive for 9.5 years, which will be incredibly difficult as there wouldn't be much space in the rocket at all. To avoid dying in an attempt to go to Pluto, we shouldn't go there in the first place. This is because it is almost impossible to survive there unless you have an extraordinary space suit. That is how we could avoid the dangers of space: wearing an incredible space suit. However, it would be really hard to make one so good it wouldn't die by the harsh conditions of Pluto as it is, at it's warmest, -223 degrees celsius. Because of this, we should just keep sending robots and other forms of artificial intelegience to Pluto instead. Finally, I am confused about when you said: the moon orbits the sun with us, it doesn't. The moon orbits Earth and it is the same with other planets, Mar's moons orbit Mars, Jupiter's moons orbit Jupiter, etc. It is still a really good and informative post and it should get a star.

      I don’t think we should go to Pluto either because your body changes when you go to space ; like when Tim Peak had to have help to walk after just 6 months in space and 9 years 5 months is a lot longer.

    P.S, This post wasn't really about venturing to Pluto, I just used this as an example of long travel. I do appreciate that you have talked about this though.

      But this isn't an opinion; it is a scientifict fact, you can't argue with that. Lots of scientists have discovered that all moons orbit the planet that they are a moon to. So the moon does orbit Earth.

    this is really interesting to learn! we might have a lot of life in space but we have just not expolred it. if we are lucky we could see some sighting of life in space. scientists have descoverd some sighting of life but we are not to sure that it will be life and that it just could be a missunderstanding and they could have not.

    Not only does it affect your body it also affects time and how old you are. For example, if you send one twin to orbit the Earth at the speed of light then time in space would go slower than in Earth.

    I don't think we should go to Pluto because we would probably die from the cold and also it's the furthest away from earth. Mars however, is much closer so it would take less time to arrive. On the other hand, it's more closer to the Sun and the new,hotter climate might be hard to get adapted to.

    I think this is a really interesting point. It is true that it takes an extremely long time to reach planets/ dwarf planets such as Pluto, and many issues arise, such as the question of health and the living conditions onboard.

    Well if we did go to Pluto for long we might run out of oxygen as well as if humans lived on that planet we are not sure if we could survive for long and scientists believe we might survive for a while with oxygen tanks

    Astronauts could cope with time when travelling in space by distracting themselves with sports activities, this will benefit them as it will stop mental distress about being thousands of lightyears away from home.
    Another way astronauts could cope with space travel is by implementing the right size of windows- not too big as they could feel sick with the view of claustrophobic blackness which is space but neither too small that they feel cooped up in a little pod which is traveling at millions of miles per hour [I guess is true!]. The windows need to be just right!
    A important detail which will hugely benefit astronauts in little capsules flying through space is having communication with loved ones, it will see their motivation and determination rise. People could argue though that connecting with friends and family would make the astronauts home sick and emotional, which would take a colossal toll on their daily performance.

    This is really interesting because i was thinking that it would also take half of your life to prepare for something like this it would be life changing and then the other half spent in a space shuttle and you have to stay there for a significant amount of time to so it may be worth it but you will spend half your life in a space shuttle

    I do not think that we should ever go to Pluto for a few reasons. Firstly, the mental load. It is just that feeling that you will not see your family for 19 yrs, most of us on the hub have not been alive for 19 yrs. Not only this but astronauts on the long journey to Pluto might feel lonely, I understand that astronauts will probably have friends aboard the mission but people they are really close to might be on Earth, every time they look out of the window the feeling that they are so far from Earth might make them quite sad and lonely, their mental state might effect the scientific research that they carry out but they will most definitely have training to deal with not just the mental but physical strains such as sleep deprivation. Food might be tight so scientists will probably to create not just a renewable source of food but a reliable one, the people on board could starve if food fails. Studies show that the meat industry is one of the top polluters due to the livestock and how much water and land is used, this contributes to deforestation. So they should not bring on board a truck load of meat because it would be cruel to the animals and it contributes to climate change, meat could also be a health risk because the meat could go rotten. There is a huge risk, the entire mission could go wrong but on the other hand space exploration is risky in its self, people have risked their lives in the name of science, the people who want do these things are aware of the risk. Looking at the other side of the argument, visiting Pluto might be ground breaking in science and technology and really benefit us, we might even be able to reverse climate change due to a discovery on Pluto, not only this but this might really motivate the younger generations of the time to reach higher and build their self esteem. We might find ways to make eco space exploration which, in my opinion, will push space exploration to the next level however there is always the risk of loss of life.

    I agree with you entirely there are so many reasons for why I agree with you but here are a few reasons why I agree with you because ; going to each planet is a long journey so just going into orbit is excstremly dangerous therefore we must be carefull with each mission to space . Also we have very little communication with the astronauts meaning if they need help we may not be able to send them the help they need meaning they are puting their life's at risk . These are a few reasons why I agree with you I hope you will think about my reasons for why I agree .

    I think that it would be very difficult for humans to go to Pluto because of the food, water, the cost and contact with Earth to just name a few.
    Food because how much food would you need for 19+ years? A lot more than you can fit on a rocket and it would not be safe to eat after a while.
    Water because, again, it would be very hard to fit enough water for the massive amount of time astronauts would need to spend up there.
    The cost is going to be gigantic because of the fuel, food, water and paying the doctors, engineers and astronauts up there.
    Lastly, contact with Earth because the people that are up there will feel very lonely without any human contact apart from the people that are in the rocket. What if we lose contact with them and the rocket breaks down?
    In conclusion, it would not be a good idea to go to Pluto.

    One option we could have for travelling through space and sustaining humans for the length of time it takes to get there without running out of food is to put astronauts in stasis. This would not be the full-on freezing of humans, but putting them in a torpor state, which is a state of reduced metabolism, which would slow down energy consumption and therefore reduce the amount of food the astronauts would require to stay alive whilst travelling. Humans require a lot of oxygen, water and food to stay alive, but putting them in a torpor state would lessen their needs for these, so less supplies would be needed, meaning more could be brought for the colonisation of planets. It would also reduce disputes between the astronauts, because, as any humans would, staying in a confined space with the same people for a long time could cause arguments and the long isolation could also cause problems with mental health. Putting them in stasis would slow down their psychological activity, so this would not happen.

    According to scientists, astronauts in stasis would only require the consumption of 300 grams of liquid nutrients per day, as opposed to 2,000 grams, the amount astronauts consume on the International Space Station. This would be fed to them through tubes, as with people who have serious illnesses and are unable to consume food, and people in comas.

    Putting humans into a torpor state is in fact already used, though only for short periods of time, in heart surgery, as it protects the person being operated on. However, putting humans into stasis could have negative impacts on them. It can have affects on memory, which may affect the whole expedition, as memory loss could affect how well they can use their training or scientific skills, and survive in extra-terrestrial conditions. Also, because we have no other reason to put humans in stasis apart from space travel, we have not done a lot of research into it, so much would be needed for this.

    Researching could take a very long time and a lot of money, which, in my opinion, could be very bad, because there are already many other causes which are in need of more attention and require money, such as poverty in the US, where NASA is based, and elsewhere, as well as hunger, climate change, air, land and water pollution, and many others. By spending a lot of time on developing stasis technology, we would be partially neglecting these issues, and spending money and time on less imminent and important problems, as they directly concern the people on our planet, and are an immediate danger, whereas space travel is not.

    Though no way to prolong this while protecting the safety of humans has been found yet, much progress has been made and if we can find a way to put people safely in stasis, similar to hibernation, this could be the key to space travel and supplies needed over long distances, but it could take a toll on the rest of people uninvolved, which is most of the population.

    My opinion is that it is more important to focus on earth-based problems, but it could be a good solution to tackling supplies and health problems over long distances of space travel.

        I think that it would be ethical if they were given a choice. The would have the choice to refuse this, if it was ever put into practice, so by consenting, they would have given permission for their body to be put into this state, so, if they were given all of the correct information about how they would be affected, it would be their choice, and should be legal.
        There is an argument that the risks of this would not be ethical, but I think that if they agreed, then it would be their choice that should be respected, and they themselves have taken the risks of putting their body into this state, where they could have refused. This would mean they would be the only person responsible for their harm, if any came to them, so, although it could cause guilt in others, I do not think it would be unethical.
