What does it take to be a good Politician?

Politicians and Power - Featured Image 1

Here and there, a lot of people are voting for different Prime Ministers they want as their Leader, but do we actually know the secrets behind being a Politicain and their behaviour?

A lot of people think that a good Politician is just about democracy but it is not. A Politician has a lot more than just having democracy. It is also about having the power that you have inside you and what you want to fight for, to change this country and improve it. To be brave, a Politician needs to have an open mind and make decisions for what is right for everyone, and they do need to be sensible of the statements they make. It takes a person to be selfless and to act for the benefit of other people, and not just about themselves because you need to care for those who need it the most.

An important thing is the way that a Politician acts. This is very important because, if you want to take part and you have to go to the 'Houses of Parliment' and when it is your turn to speak and you want to say something and then you start using slang language, the leader of the 'Houses of Parliment' will immediately not accept you based on the way you talk or based on the way that you dress, because the 'Houses of Parliment' will only accept people with good english language and candidates who will take this matter seriously. You need to be a good role model so others can look up to you and people will think what a good person you are, and will try to copy your ways in the way that you act, talk, dress and present yourself.

You need to be ready on what you want to say and what you want to fight for and what you want to change. You also need to know what you are going to say next because if someone disagrees with you or if someone wants to make a statement and you do not know what to say, you are not acting as a good Politician because you need to be prepared for questions and you need to be confident with your words.

Some Politicians like to sneak up on people so they can steal an idea, but when it comes to talking about the idea, they try to hide and say that they have no idea what others are talking about. This issue leads to not being honest and truthful. Saying, 'Yes, I did steal their idea but my ideas are...' will be much better than lying because you will not get in trouble for telling the truth, although you will get in trouble for lying, as it is not pleasant to steal someone else's idea, but it would be better if you do not steal anyone's ideas in the first place.

These are the very important steps you have to follow to be a 'good Politician' and who knows, maybe you, the reader would like to be a Politician one day. If you want to be a Politician when you grow up, just remember to have a good reputation and care for others.

Thank you for reading my post,

briliant_fossil.

Thank you for kicking off this discussion, brilliant_fossil. You've given a sustained description of what makes a good politician and linked it to their behaviour - well done! Of all the things you've mentioned, which is most important?

Being a politician means giving a voice for a constituency of many, many people. Having this responsibility on your shoulder, should make you feel powerful and selfish, but politicians have to remember that people voted for them for a reason... and should listen to the people who got them so far. This shows that a politician needs to be open and be honest with voters. They also need to look to the future rather than stick to now or the past. For example, not to focus entirely on Brexit and look forwards to what problems climate chaos will cause and take action now, for the will of the people and not for themselves.

        1. The language was very difficult! We'd like everything on the Hub to be easy to read by other member of the club
        2. It was well researched, but some of this didn't appear to be written in your own words.

Would you be able to take on this feedback and provide a second draft, on the same topic?

I think that to be a good politician you need to be a variety of many things to get people's trust and to listen to everyone.

I think that a good politician should be a person who listens to the public and assess their viewpoints on their country and what they think you should do. They need to accept what other politicians say or do but if they do not approve they should justify there viewpoint of what they think and what they think and what they think the country should do.

I also think they should be a person that could be trusted to run the country and be trusted to take any responsibilities they would like. I think they would definitely need to be responsible for parliament and if they have done the wrong to take responsibilities for their actions what consequences they would need to face for the country and for themselves.

I think a good politician should be a person who knows what the write and wrong choices for the country are and to cope being under pressure from the press.

I think that to be a good politician you should be confident enough to talk in front of lots of people, be a good reader and be fluent. I think this because if you can't talk in front of a lot of people you would be a very bad politician because you get put on TV some times so you would probably find that hard. You will have to be a good reader because if your not and you wrote a note to share your idea and you can't read it nobody will know about it and finally you need to be fluent because if your saying something really important and your talking like a robot people won't be able to understand you. Although this is what i think other people might think different which is fine if they think it.

I think that being a good politician means that you listen to the public and their points of views to see what they want you to do for the country. This means that if you become a Prime Minister, you’ll know what is wanted and what the most appropriate thing to do is. They also have to take major responsibilities for their actions and they must be open with the public and share information instead of hiding it because if they don’t, an important announcement might have been made (like a change) and when the day came, the people will be angry because they didn’t know what was happening. Politicians also have to be selfless and not keep money for themselves for the wellbeing of the country because they will need that money for important things.
To conclude, I that these are the reasons that politicians should follow in order to be great!

To be a good politician, i personally think you have to listen to everyone's ideas and be considerate and patient.you also have to have excellent vocabulary and sceptecism knowledge to be aware of the news (and fake news). you also have to have a very POWERFUL voice so you can speak out about important things going on in the world around us. i personally don't think Boris johnson is the best priminister we could wish for i don't think he is making the right choices for our country. If i could chose any celebrity to be priminister, i would chose David Attemborough because he is an excellent speaker, is sceptical and could put a stop to plastic pollotion and get more people to believe Global warming is a thing.

On the one hand some think that to be a great politician you need to always tell the truth and be honest. This may be because they think that even though something bad is going on in their country they think that the first people to know about it should be the people of that country. These people think that the people of that country will be more heartbroken to find out that their leader is lying than to find out that for example they are at war.

However, on the other hand, other people think that to be the best leader you need to tell ‘a little white lie’. This will ensure your country will not at all worry about what lies ahead of them. These people think that people would feel more heart broken if they find out that their country is at war and they don’t know about it.

After approaching the information with scepticism and open mindedness I strongly believe that it is a good idea for politicians not to lie because of the reasons I stated above.

You also need to be a great role model so that people will take after you and to look up to you. They need to be true full to their country because if not people will not believe in your ideas and then will become a bad politician. They need to speak in correct English and not use slang. You have to respect democracy and what it is for because if not you will make it unfair for people in our country. You also need to use your own ideas not anyone else is because you can get in trouble for doing it and could also lose your job potentially. You need to speak freely about what you think as well not just what the prime minister thinks, you should have your say to and listen to other people. You also need to make decisions for what’s right

I feel like I agree that running a country isn't all about Democracy it is also about being careful with what you say and being truthful to yourself and your country because honesty is a key of life,as well as that things that you are saying might affect your country so you must keep that in mind.If you want to be a PM then you have to be sceptical , open minded and you have to let your country speak out. Those are my thoughts on being a PM i might be able to use them someday never know.

When you are Politician, you must be ready to speak out and say your speeches with confidence, and if someone does disagree, then you must know what to say, but you must not be unready to speak. If you want to be a good Politician then you must Dress nicely, speak confidently, act responsibly and present yourself with pride and positivity. However, you must never lie or people will not trust you and you need people to believe you to be a good politician. You must believe in democracy and have all four skills open mindedness, scepticism, speaking out and reasoning

In my opinion the biggest passion to be a politician is to understand your countries liking of a good politician and how they like change. The biggest satisfaction to be a good politician is to let your country know about the issues and the other problems outside and inside of the country. I believe that rather than constantly focusing on Brexit when we SHOULD DEFINATLEY be putting our mindset onto the climate change problem or helping Australia by raising money for there country and the people because I don’t see the difference between us as we are both countries full of people who need help so the best choice to make would quite easily be to help each other out.

There are many reasons to become a trusted politician.
Well if you want to be a politician or if you are one you should listen to others carefully and take in other peoples advice. You should do this because people will start to trust you and will give more ideas to you and also you will have more advice and ideas for your decisions.Another reason to be a good politician is to be honest to people. This is a good one because if you lie about your advice and what you are going to do people wont trust you and will begin to not believe you when you are telling the truth. My final reason to be a good politician is to be confident. This is a good thing to have as a politician because if you are standing up and are talking to a lot of people you will need confidence to talk.

In my opinion a good politician needs to listen to EVERYONES opinion because there is people out there who don't get the chance to speak out so you could be that good politician that inspires a lot of people as they know there voice can be heard. Also a good politician needs to be a role model, this is because they need to be professionals when they come together to the House of Commons/ House of Lords and respect every ones opinion. In my view I think politicians need to be honest, selfless, and mature so they don't just agree with themselves they take on what the public have said.

I think that a good politician would need to be able to not discriminate or be bias, they should do what they know is right for the place we live in. they shouldn't do stuff for money or compliments and a politician needs to be a role model to all people in the people they rule or even other countries! they should be able to form good alliances with other countries (if they have to) to keep us safe and they should be able to make more referendums so that there is more democracy in the country we are in. they have to be able to keep to their promises and not lie to get their place. Personally i feel like they should also be honest because in general its kind and if you want to have power over a country you should at least tell them your plans for them so its fair but if what your doing is serious you wouldn't have to tell them your plans. To add the cherry on top i also think you have to be sceptical because if you want to take in ideas you should only do the ideas that are worth trying, i'm not saying that not all ideas are good but i'm saying some might not be ideal for the country.

To be a good politician, the qualities needed are:

Firstly, politicians have to have integrity and be selfless so they do the best for the country and not for yourself and for the money. Even if you do the right thing for yourself at the time, the public will get on your back and in the end your life will be worse than if you made the right decision and not be guilty of letting your country down.

Also, MPs have to express their opinions because if you had a perfect idea and didn't tell anyone, the country would be a worse place than it could possibly be. Also, MPs have to show BNC qualities, especially open mindedness because they have to listen to others to improve the overall outcome of the situation. Another BNC quality needed is sceptism because if you don't question others ideas then the result won't be as great because 2 minds are better than one.

These are the values a prime minister should have.
Firstly, they should be a good role model. I think this because a prime minister is a leader and so therefore should be someone people can look up to.
Secondly, a good prime minister should have integrity, I think this because a prime minister leads a country, they should make desicion for everyone instead just be doing things for themselves.
Finally, a good prime minister needs to be open minded, I think this because a prime minister can not just do things that he/she thinks in right, she/he needs to take other people's opinions into account.

I agree that to be a good politician you have to talk standard English because when politicians make speeches to the country and in the House of Commons, they would need to talk proper English and not slang; if a politician was debating the opposition would need to know what he is saying the moment he is saying it so if he was talking slang that might not happen. Also, if a politician was on TV making a speech or just talking everyone that is watching would need to know what he is saying, and what he wants to do. I think this because if a politician or an MP wanted to make a vote for something but he was talking entirely in slang, people might vote for it without even realising what they are voting for.

I think a good politician should be honest because if you did steal an idea then it would potentially ruin your career also if you had stolen an idea off another politician who everyone believed was honest then they would believe them and even less people would like you .Open-mindedness you'd also need to be openminded as then maybe everyone could agree on an issue then we as a country are facing (Brexit). if your openminded then you might come up with an idea which could solve it too. You also need to stick too what you've promised so people can rely on you to be honest. Not to be selfless most politicians are so you need to think about how the country feels too not just you. You need to not just think of the money as then you won't think properly. You can't be bias to another side , you need to listen to other peoples ideas too. You need to be confident in your ideas so other people can hear them.

I think that a good politician is someone who takes risks because every politician wants the best for their party so someone who takes risks is bound to get somewhere one day in their political career and if they do, they can lead the UK to somewhere one day. Sceptical. The reason I have chosen this is because you cannot always agree with what everyone says even if they are in your party which is also taking risks because most of the time every party agrees on what their fellow party member says, which is not wrong but you need to put forth ideas of which you think are true and you will accomplish. If I were a politician I would discuss about things not just in the UK also in other countries around the world and will see what I can do to prevent it from happening again.

This is what I would do if I were PM

If you are a politician you have to be selfless and help other people without a care in the world about how it affects you . I believe that this makes a good politician because the politicians input helps / destroyers the entire country of around 60 million people

I agree because they have to be selfless to rule a country well, they also have to be open minded because they need to do not only what they think is right but most importantly, what the general public wants or think is right.

I think that if you want to be a good politician you need to have a certain amount of courage and believe in what you say. For example, just before the general election, Jeremy Corbyn was being slammed for not speaking about his viewpoint on Brexit. Whereas, if he had just said what he thought, people would have respected him more. Also, I believe you need to have a certain amount of courage. If you are in the public eye, people tend to have opinions about you and sometimes express them in harsh ways. If you do not have some bravery, you will hide away because of this. However, you cannot have too much courage, as you can appear to be bragging -which is not a good look. In conclusion, you should have a certain amount of confidence and believe in yourself.

Does Jeremy Corbyn deserve praise for waiting before he gave a verdict on Brexit? You might be interested in our Stretch and Challenge question under Editors' Picks about whether politicians can be too honest.

A good politician is someone who is honest because if you are honest then you are giving them a true story not one you had made up.This is very important because if you where not honest you would not make a good politicians. You would need to be ready to answer any ones questions that they might have because if you are not ready then they would move on to the next one and you will not get a chance to speek up about your views. You will also need to be a team player, listen to others and not have to much power.🙄😣😥😌

I think that to be a good politician you need to listen to the public and try and help achieve what they want. To be a really great politician, I think it important to earn the public's respect and trust. That comes from trying to be as honest as possible. Be a good role model so that the public can look up to you and admire you as a person and most importantly, aspire to be like you. In my opinion, if you follow all of these steps then you will definitely be a super politician.

Being a good politician means you have to be open, integral, honest a role model. If you not one of does the public might not trust you. Open is different subject. Being open is not a must but should be be a regular value. The reason open is not a must because you might not have time. For example is Britain and Japan are at war; if Japan has launched a missile does the prime minister have time for a national announcement .Social media isn't good because Japan can change course,Overall it is good to incorporate all the values but don't be open if there is no time.

A really great read @insightful_fossil. Some very clear and detailed points. I especially liked what you said about politicians doing the right thing for the people. All too often nowadays, politicians are making decisions that benefit themselves or their friends. A great politician will always think about the people they are representing and put their needs before anything else. I personally think politics needs a complete shift in the way it prioritises the voice of the people and considers the needs of everyone.

what do you need to be a good politician?
An amazing politician always has the courage, to be honest in front of the public eye and honest to the local MP. You need to care about the world around and other people, not just you and your money and leadership. There are many politicians in the would and there are some good politicians but the truly great ones are honest. You need to take other peoples advice on how you can help the world.
The bad politicians don't do any of this they don't help the world and they brag about how good they are and their only care about them and money. I may be right or wrong but I think this is what makes a good politician.

To be a good politician I think that you need to follow the laws correctly. For example you don’t want to be like John Prescott (who punched a protester), Chris Huhne (who went over the speed limit), Lalu Prasad Yadav ( who stole money from the government fund or Donald Trump (who is not giving aid to Ukraine). Personally I think not going aid (help) to Ukraine is not a problem, but using my scepticism I know that he must have done something bad to get into that trouble in the first place. Some of the people that I stated above do not deserve a punishment like Donald Trump or Boris Johnson because what they did was bad but not bad enough to be put in jail. However some of the people I stated above SHOULD deserve a serious punishment because they did something so bad that they SHOULD be thrown in prison. Lots of other people in the past have done bad things and some were punished some weren’t! Thanks for reading my comment!!!
