Key idea - Leadership

Concept - Power

Our artwork is about how the public have control over leaders, in this case, Boris Johnson, and what they do. The key idea and concept link together because the public have power over Boris Johnson and his leadership. This image shows leadership by including Boris's head and in it there is a city. This image also shows power because the arm represents the public having power to participate in big votes and have control over the Prime Minister. We have used a wide range of colours to show that the picture appeals to everyone. We have learnt that leaders can be manipulated by followers. We think that people should notice this more so that they feel like they matter and have a say. We want people to feel empowered .

Well done you three - I saw this piece first hand in your school and heard you explain it to me! You link the artwork to some of the big concepts. My question is - do followers manipulate leaders more than leaders manipulate followers? And does the media manipulate anyone?

I think that leaders manipulate followers more than followers manipulate leaders because , in previous years, many votes have ended the way the leaders wanted . I think the media manipulates people’s minds into thinking that anything posted online about leaders is true because people may not think that media would over exaggerate something as big as leading politicians.

Yes of course! They all have power to manipulate but all of them have the power to inspire one another. What I mean by this is that people can do something that starts a domino effect which can have a great impact on a much larger scale. People do things that the media report on, people do things that the leader might be affected by and the leader does something that the public will be affected by. The media choose to report on disaster because it sells more and because of this, they benefit from the money that the public provide. If the public only see disasters in the headlines, they will think of the world as a much larger, scarier place and so on. The point is that the media, the leaders and the public are equal and have created a loop of manipulation.
