The school trip

This activity got us thinking about whether you could relly on information being correct. You need to have evidence. Assumptions are dangerous because it could be unfair and biased. Hearing everyone's point of view changes your understanding.

    Hi productive_petal,

I've given this post a star because you've created a new post correctly. You've thought of a new discussion which isn't being talked about already: the school trip detention activity from your BNC sessions. This will spark new discussion with other BNC members.

Can anyone explain what the task was and why it helps us think about assumptions?

Everyone's points of view is very different. Even though you might believe someone is correct the person might be instead of the others. So you must listen to other people's points of view .

Yeah because everyone has their own thoughts and they might not believe any thing.

Everyone's perspective changes over the course of reading it e.g first you might believe Raj but over the course of reading it you might believe Lisa. You should listen to other peoples perspectives because they are more important then yours. It doesn't matter if somebody has a different point of view from you.

They were all saying different things. One of the pupils had new shoes. Another was jealous. It was like dominoes, one fell over and then knocked the teacher over. The teacher was annoyed because she was having a bad day. She gave Raj a detention, because she thought that he banged into her deliberately. But it wasn’t fair for just him to get a detention. The teacher should have sat them all together and talked to them all to find out what really happened instead of assuming it was him and blaming him. You shouldn’t assume things about people. Raj would have felt angry.
Sometimes in school when you are doing group work not everyone gets a chance to speak. Then they don’t have a say. When everyone has their say, they feel better and feel like they have participated.

Everyone’s opinion changes If you read Rajs one you would think that Lisa was in the wrong but when you Read Lisa opinion you would believe Lisa but everyone’s opinion changes it’s not always what you think is right

They might be but it is not likely because they all have different perspectives like if Lisa pushed Raj out of the way because he had new trainers and was about to step into dog poo. But then Raj made it sound like a whole different story about Lisa shouting loser at him and she pushed him on purpose into China.

I think Raj deserves detention because he is know as a trouble maker towards the remaining 3 people who had there say in the problem. Then he uses Lisa as an excuse to try and get him out of trouble and he 'accidentally' bumps into Chyna.

    In my opinion,
I think Raj deserves detention because the teacher who was there was very stressed and knew that he is a trouble maker so she assumed that he was being silly with Chyna, which leads to my second point, Lisa did say that she was trying to warn him about seeing the dog poop on the ground, but I also think Lisa shouldn't have pushed him because that also lead to Raj falling onto Chyna, and Chyna falling onto the teacher which might have made the teacher even more stressed, because the head teacher said that if he gets any complains from other people he would cancel all trips for the whole year and she wouldn't want any of the kids to miss all the fun trips they had planned out for them. And that's why I think Raj should get a detention.

I think Raj should get a detention because even though Raj didn't mean to bump into Chyna he still should get a punishment for all the trouble he's been up to

Raj should get a detention because even though

HI, You make a great point about assumptions here. We make assumptions every day and they are not always bad, but we must challenge what we think!

Can you think of any assumptions that help us go about our regular days? For example, if I run the hot tap, I make an assumption that the water coming out might be hot and therefore I shouldn't put my hand directly under it. This is an example of an assumption that helps me get by.

Can you think of any assumptions that we should challenge?

    Hi productive petal,

I know what you mean because you cant always judge what happened if you only hear one persons perspective. I felt at first with raj he sounded like Lisa was being mean however when we heard different perspectives we started to realize that Lisa wasn't jealous she was trying to protect his new shoes.

We all make decisions every day and like one time you may make an assumption that if you start walking to school at 8:45 than you will get to school at 8:59 or if you turn on the bbc at 8:30 am the news will be on.

    Thank you
    sincerely,
    Adventurous piano

I think you should always listen to other peoples perspective's. This is because people will be judged on something that they didn't actually do wrong. Like the school trip it sounded as if Lisa was being mean and jealous but listening to other peoples perspectives you can see that she was just trying to protect his new shoes.

I really like what you said about assumptions and having evidence. I do believe that just making an assumption is unfair and biased but when you have the evidence things are made fair. Listening to other peoples perspectives are also important.

I really liked this exercise it tought me not to just go with one source and hear all the other sources before you make an assumption. This is really important because someone's account of something could be biased or exaggerated so what you need to do is read all the accounts and pick out certain key pieces and put them together. This way you will be able to get quite a good account of the situation.

This exercise is also linked to the issue in Myanmar. We need to hear all of the accounts before siding.
What if Aung San Suu Kyi is really trying to help to the best of her ability but the media is mixing and twisting her words?

Not everybody has the same opinion which is great but you should not be rude to people about their opinion or beliefs. The people in Myanmar are prosecuting and forcing away the Rohingia people just because they don't share the same opinion in life! BTW how do you spell Rohingia?

The people in Myanmar are going through a lot where they live and I honestly don’t know how they put up with it. Imagine you living like that. There is a lot of things that we take for granted but they don’t have that. Like YouTube, Netflix, fortnite, WiFi some types of medicine they aren’t as lucky as we are and we don’t even notice.😞😔😣

Raj's behaviour towards his cousin could have prompted her to be bias.

I think that Mrs Townsend was just doing her job, as the headteacher told her that if the children were misbehaving, they wouldn't be able to have the opportunity to go on other trips, and she didn't want that. I feel that she was also being bias, as she suspected that he did it, because of the fact that he was always getting into trouble.
Raj was showing off his new shoes, which would obviously prompt some people to get annoyed.

I think that Raj shouldn't have got detention because Lisa did push him but that he should have got a warning for overreaction. Lisa however was obviously lying so she should have got a warning too. Also Miss Townsend shouldn't have assumed even though she didn't see anything happen. China was well behaved and shouldn't get into any trouble.

I think that we should listen to everyone’s point because in this context nobody listens to anyone’s story . They all have different points of view. This is why if you listen to one persons view, you would have listened to them and say that you’d agree to them because you didn’t know what was correct. This is why you have to know the full story.

This topic links to our issue because everyone has a different opinion and if everyones idea was the same then the solution would be easy to find. If someone was lying on social media it would be impossible to know if they are lying.

I do think raj should get the detention because he was messing around and that led to an innocent pupil getting into trouble and injured. Two students said that raj had been not doing the right thing so that means what raj said was not true and that means that he should get a detention for that. A teacher was pushed by and that was raj's fault.
