SHOULD WE INTERVENE!

Hong Kong - Featured image 6

WHAT IS HAPPENING?

Hong Kong right now is in a huge crisis. People can make elections, but China picks their president. People think that China has too much power over Hong Kong. The current Chief Excecutive Carrie Lam, whom HongKonger's view as Beijing's puppet, is trying to stop all the protesting. Hong Kong is a part of China, however in it's day to day existence, Hong Kong operates like it's own country in many ways. They both share the President of China as their chief of state. There have been clashes since June when we've seen police firing rubber bullets, tear gas and pepper spray at protesters in repeated bids to break up peaceful demonstrations.

PROTESTING

Hong Kong's protest has started since June. People are protesting around the street, about 2 million people (1/4 of the population in Hong Kong) were apart of a protest and police blocked airports for a few days and started firing tear gas and ruber bullets, injuring other protesters badly. Hundreds of thousands of people in Hong Kong, a city of about seven million, protested a contentious extradition law on June 9. HongKongers wear masks (that look like medical masks) to dodge pollution. As a result, Hong Kong has seen a wave of protests that have attracted millions of demonstrators over the past four months. Protesters are still really angry at the police who have been accused of using excessive force against the demonstrators. For months, Hong Kong's streets have seethed with discontent. Recently, university students in Hong Kong have started to protest to support the protests and help this situation that is going on. The umbrella movement has been a big movement since 2014, protesters have been using the umbrella.

HISTORY

Until 1997, Hong Kong was a British colony - meaning it was controlled by Britain Hong Kong was then apart of the British empire. Since returning to Chinese rule, it has more autonomy than the mainland, and it's people more rights. The arrangement is known as "one country, two systems".Years ago, Britiain made a deal with Hong Kong. A rule that wold last until 2047. Britiain ruled Hong Kong for many years until Britiain handed Hong Kong back to China. Under the “one country, two systems” style of government brought in after Hong Kong was returned to China in 1997. When Britain ruled over Hong Kong, Hong Kong wasn't a democracy. Soon after, Britain broke the deal and Britain no longer rules over Hong Kong.

SHOULD BRITAIN INTERFERE

In my opinion, I think that we should NOT because, we already have loads of problems going on in our country like: The Climate Change Emergency and Brexit. Even Brexit hasn't happened yet and Climate Change is a huge problem for us, for everyone. If we interfere now, then our world could be destroyed, if we do interfere, we could become just like Hong Kong (protesting and police hurting others badly). Another reason why I think we shouldn't interfere is because even though we broke the deal, we aren't ruling over their country anymore. As I said, we have our problems we NEED to face. I think that HongKongers are wanting Britain to intervene is because no one in their country is trying to help them. They want us to help because we ruled their country before, so I think that they think that we know how to run their country. In Hong Kong, a teenager was shot in the chest by the police for protesting. I don't think that the police are doing that much to help the crisis because I think that they are just firing tear gas and rubber bullets, killing innocent people who are just fighting for their lives. MP's should talk about this in parliament, but not that much. We've got our own problems to worry about, if we've finished with all those VERY important "stuff" then I think that we should interfere. I understand why people would say that we should interfere because we did make a deal but we broke it. But I strongly believe that we should NOT intervene. I think the protesters want peace and freedom and for the promise that has been made (for the people to have freedom and peace until 2047) to come true, and for the police to stop shooting people who aren't guilty. I think that is one of the reasons why China wants their army to go after protesters in Hong Kong to maybe stop what is happening in Hong Kong.

I DON'T THINK BRITAIN SHOULD INTERFERE!

    But I disagree
I think we should get involved because the last time we didnt get involved (the spanish civil war) it led to world war 2 and since we didnt help them they didnt help us.
This could mean that hong kong wont help us in the future.

I think we should and should not get involved as It is between Hong Kong but we agreed to release responsibilities for 47 years. If you read through the posts do you agree with any of the opposite side’s argument /comments.
I agree we should get involved because, we made a promise and if we don’t help them now will they help us in the future when we need it.
I disagree that we should help because, it is between those two places and it’s their own issue. We should get involved if they don’t want us there. Maybe we should get involved when they ask us to help.

I don't understand when you said " if we do intervene then we will become like Hong Kong." Why would we become like Hong Kong? Is it because people wouldn't want to help Hong Kong and start protesting against it? If so, then I don't think people would protest against something like that as it isn't really a problem but a decision. Also, what deal did we break, I think China was the one who broke it but if it isn't then tell me as I'm probably wrong as you researched this. Personally, I think we should intervene but maybe not verbally, we could stop giving them resources and see if they stop because they need the resources. I think this post is really good but it is just not what I agree with. Nice work.

We shouldn't intervene because China and the UK are good trading partners. Also, we get a lot of our resources from China such as food and we could lose that if they get angry at the UK. It isn't really our problem as well and Hong Kong might not like it if we intervene and we cold make it worse. In short, we shouldn't intervene.

    Dear James cleverly

Hi am a year five student in Lyons hall primary school. I am writing to you because there is a crisis in Hong Kong and I would like you to listen to me but even though I am younger I should have a saying.

The problem is there have been to many disagreements between Hong Kong and China for example , Hong Kong did not get to vote for their leader and China appointed one instead(carrie lam) also booksellers who sold books that China do not want to see have disappeared and then reappeared in China prisons.

I think Britain should intervene because if not we will have to watch Hong Kong suffer and die.

In conclusion I think and I believe that we should intervene and support the people of Hong Kong otherwise it we be horrible to watch them die also our challenges are that they have a massive army

In literacy we have been writing letters about the Hong Kong Crisis. I personally don’t think we should interviene because w could lose being great friends with such a powerful country and lose trades with them. Also we have been away from Hong Kong for so long I don’t think it would be right to interviene. Recently, having watched the news, I found out that a Chinese policeman shot a protester at point blanc range so from this I can tell the situation is getting worse. Something needs to be done

Britain won a series of wars against China and we won Hong Kong over then Hong Kong were under strict rules but as we grew as a country Hong Kong grew with us and developed a democracy .then in 1997 we gave Hong Kong back to China and sighted the sins British joint declaration and would let them get on their own two feet until 2047 .then they would become independent .

    Yes
China are taking control of Hong Kong and are choosing there mp’s and what they are allowed and what they can’t have . They are trying to take every bit of democracy out of Hong Kong and think that they should have no freedom.

    No
We know what China are doing is wrong but if we do intervene we would lose a lot of trade .plus China has a big military so if this does go wrong its not going to end well for us . Even though only a quarter of Hong Kong are protesting that might be because the rest are scared that they could be put in prison

So in conclusion I think that we should intervene because it’s getting out of hand people are getting shot and badly injured after seeing a protestor getting shot we need to help now .

    Hong Kong Crisis
In literacy currently we have been learning and researching about the Hong Kong Crisis. This is a two sided argument
    FOR!
We have been caught to attention by Hong Kong as a result to China’s behaviour and breaking our Sino Joint British Declaration with they signed as well as us, we have also realised that Hong Kong are taking Hong Kong’s wanted Human Rights as much as China don’t want Hong Kong to have human rights Hong Kong are still standing up for them selves
    AGAINST!
They said we should be able to sort this out but this is not our problem really, they should sort out their business we have to step away.
MY OPINION! researched a lot and I feel we should not intervene it is their problem they should be able to sort it because we signed a Sino British Joint Declaration to not be nosey and interfere with any problems.

As we have been learning about the Hong Kong crisis, this is a two sided argument but which side should we choose. Should we intervene? Or just stay out of it? As we have been researching I have learnt that Hong Kong MPs are chosen by the Chinese Government Xi, but I don’t find it fair how Hong Kong lives in a democracy and China is just butting in, however if we help Hong Kong get back on their feet then China might not have as much power over them as they used to. On the other hand China gives us a lot of products and if we intervene China might not give us as much products and we might get on the wrong side of China. I think we shouldn’t intervene we have not really communicated to Hong Kong for a few years now, but also I think we should intervene because China did sign the Sino-British Joint Declaration so they can only supervise and support Hong Kong until they are independent. (THIS IS MY OPINION IM ONLY JUST SPEAKING OUT!)

Britain won wars against China so we took Hong Kong and ruled them for 150 years and it was not a democracy. As we started doing things freely so did Hong Kong. After 150 years we gave Hong Kong back to China but the had to sign a contract called the Sino- Joint British declaration ( one country two systems ) so that Hong Kong could get more democratic. The declaration should have lasted until 2047 so China and England signed it but now China is trying to take that back and rule Hong Kong.
Hong Kong in crisis: some of the Hong Kongese people disagree with China. HongKong wants to keep their democracy but China is trying to stop that, so Hong Kong wants help to stop what is going on. They want to be free. China have a big army and we train with them so if we help Hong Kong things could get bad for us but things will get worse for Hong Kong if we don’t
In conclusion, having looked at both sides I think we should help them.

    Hong Kong in crisis
China and Great Britain signed a contract called the Sino-Joint British Declaration in 1997 which meant that they would let Hong Kong try to be an independent country by 2047. It also meant that China should be supportive and supervise them. China lost a lot of wars to us and that led to us taking control of Hong Kong. The British government had an absolute rule over Hong Kong for 150 years and it ended when we signed the contract of 1 country 2 systems contract. China wants Hong Kong to live in state capitalism so the chinese government has full power. They are also taking freedom away on things like removing MPs chosen fairly by Hong Kongese people and replacing them with Chinese officials instead.

    Writing this comment I have gathered all the imformation to speak out in the way I think is correct;
As you may know we ruled Hong Kong for 150 years and gave them back to China in 1997, but Hong Kong's people wanted to continue to live in a democracy unlike Chinas dictatorship (undemocratic rules,) the people of China have to follow there leader and are not allowed to vote in general elections etc. . I don't think we should not be on Hong Kongs side because if we go onto their sidewe will lose the frendship that we have with China. We have lots of great deals with China such as:
    *food trades
    *money trades
and other good trades that help our country running.

On the one hand, some people think that is a good idea to intervene with Hong Kong and China. This may be because they think that that we are a good country and will do whatever it takes to help other people. This may mean to sacrifice our people for other countries. These people think that it may not affect us, so we might as well take the risk. they also believe that if they grow up and Hong Kong is in terrible danger, we will fell bad and ask our selves why we didn't help. Despite the fact that they know how dangerous it is to help them they know the right thing to do is to help friends of aid.

However, on the other hand, other people believe that we shouldn't intervene with Hong Kong and China because they have taken in how big, strong and fierce Chinas army are and we don't want the to use that against us if they get annoyed. Also we don't want to drive ourselves into danger when we have everything we need right here on our doorstep. Although these people know how much Hong Kong need us they know the right thing to do is to keep ourselves to ourselves.

After approaching the information with open mindedness and scepticism I NOW strongly believe that the right thing to do is to keep ourselves to ourselves because of the reasons I stated above. Thanks for reading my comment!!

I have been looking at this with an open mind and I have got two sides of this issue
Hong Kong is currently in crisis and with my own opinion I think we should indeed intervene because they absolutely need our help with this they can’t do this without us and the British government has had absolute control over Hong Kong for over 100 years and no one is doing anything about it it’s time for us to step in and help them out we can’t just sit back and do nothing
No we shouldn’t step in because this is fine it’s not our problem and they can at least attempt to try and do it them self it’s not fair on us to step in all the time it’s not our country and it’s not our property and problem we can’t just go all the way to Hong Kong just to sort out a issue with them.

Britain and Hong Kong have a long history during the 1800s,China and Britain have had many wars and China mainly lost them, leading to Britain ruling Hong Kong for over 150year. Eventually, our rule ended in 1997 when Britain gave Hong Kong it’s independence by co-signing the Sino British joint declaration. Hong Kong are now being ruled by China and China wants one country one system.
Now it has got so bad that the police are shooting rubber bullets in the streets. The Hong Kongese people are fighting for their human rights because most people want to live in their own democracy, whereas the Chinese government want to crush it.
I think we should intervene and help the people of Hong Kong. I am speaking out because despite the fact that Hong Kong is part of China, I believe in the power of democracy to help the Hong Kongese people.

Can you explain why you agree or add some new information to strengthen the opinion?
