My letter to an MP: giving Hong Kong back their right to freedom.

Dear Catherine West,

I am writing to persuade you that Britain absolutely should intervene in the situation in Hong Kong. China have been treating citizens to Hong Kong unfairly- sending potentially innocent people to prison without a fair trail and ignoring the rights of the people. This has led to violence such as riots and needs to stop as this simply isn’t right.

You may be wondering why Britain has anything to do with Hong Kong. In fact, they do because is 1842 China gave Hong Kong to Britain where it remained as a colony for 150 years, meaning we have a shared history. Believe it or not, there are currently 119,990 people who were born in Hong Kong but now live here in Britain. If this doesn’t highlight our responsibilities, I don’t know what does!

When Britain gave up Hong Kong in 1997, it returned back to China with the agreement that the way of life and the economy in Hong Kong remained unchanged until 2047. As Britain was involved in making this promise, surely we have a responsibility to make sure it is upheld.

You may worry that Hong Kong would prefer us to stay of the situation but I can assure you that is not the case. According to a BBC article, Hong Kong protestors rallied outside the British Consulate to demand the freedom they had been promised, even singing God Save the Queen and waving Union Jack flags. One demonstrator even said, “We believe that the UK government has the legal rights and moral obligation to protect Hong Kong people.” We cannot let these people down…

There are several things you can do to help this situation. I strongly believe Hong Kong citizens should have the right to come to the UK for safety because having your basic human rights taken away just isn’t right. In addition, as China has broken its side of the one country, two systems agreement, sure we can step in and take back Hong Kong.

We have to do what is best for the people. It is time to give back Hong Kong their rights.

Yours sincerely,

Kaydn

What form of intervention do you think Britain should take, genius_squid?
