LAND DEGRADATION CONTRIBUTES TO EXTREME WEATHER

Land degradation refers to the misue of land by human and animals which leads to the loss of it's fertility or usefullness.

Most of the problems that lead to land degradation are caused by man's efforts to adjust his environment to suit his requirements or use it for his benefits.

E.g When a farmer clears a piece of land for farming,he has degraded that piece of land.

Again when the vegetation is cleared to build more houses, the land is degraded.

The question is,HOW DOES LAND DEGRADATION CONTRIBUTE TO EXTREME WEATHER?

Let's look at the causes first.

OVERGRAZING:When animalsare allowed to feed on a piece of land for along time the land becomes bare, when this happens hot weather conditions set in and because there are no trees to serve as windbreaks to influence relief rainfall, humidity is also reduced. Therefore rainfall is scarce.

DESERTIFICATION THEN SETS IN AS A RESULT OF NO RAIN,THE GROUND ALSO DEVELOPS CRACKS AS INTHIS IMAGE.PLANTS MAY DIE BECAUSE ALL THE NUTRIENTS IN THE SOIL ARE DESTROYED.

WILDFIRES:WHEN THERE IS NO RAIN,THERE ARE EXRTREME HOT CONDITIONS CAUSING THE FORESTAND GRASSLAND TO BURN AS IN THE IMAGE BELOW.PEOPLE, PLANTS AND ANIMALS DIE.

This are some of the ways land degradation contributes to extreme weather.

The effects of land degradation are many and are a threat to the very survival of humanity, they are:

1.loss of soil fertility.

2.low crop yield.

3.rduction in the amount of rainfall and more.

We must control land degradation. We all have a duty to control it.some are:

1.practicing afforestation.

2.educating people and more.
