Can we make a difference by acting locally?

I was sitting on a bench ovelooking the Medetrreanean Sea hoping to find cool breeze. Currently, Gaza in Palestine is affected by a heat wave which is making peoples' life hard as people are fasting in Ramadan these days. We have experienced many heat waves in the previous years. Many countries are also affected by them as well. They are one of the consequences of global warming caused by polloution and by humans acting carelessly towards environmental problems. As a student living in this part of the world, I really want to contribute in solving this problem but often ask myself, ' can I make a difference?' , I'm only oneyoung person and the earth's problems are huge! Then I tell my self that if we all think this way, we will reach no way and things will getting worse. If everyone on the planet acts locally and takes measures to protect the earth and reduce the pollution, we will make a difference, won't we?

I looked at the sea and remeber seeing the rubbish and the plastic left by the visitors in Summer. I also saw waste water pumped into its waters day and night causing horrible smell. I had an idea of a project we can do at school with my teacher and my friends. We can launch an initiative aiming at protecting our side of the Medierranean Sea hoping to make a differnce. I think we can do something and if all young people can take small steps , together we can achieve sommething big.

There are some simple actions we can do too. By switching the lights off after we leave a room and by turning off the taps when we are not using it, we can make a difference. By launching a small project to clean the beach and raise awareness on the danger of plasics thrown in water we can make a difference in our context.

I'm wondering what you can do in your context to contribute to reducing global warming so that we avoid these heat waves?

    Hi helpful_guitar,
Thank you for your post. I've given you a star because you've written in a very engaging way for the reader and used real examples to explain yourself.

How might you raise awareness about the dangers of plastics in your community? Do you have any challenges which might make your plan difficult and how could you get around these challenges?

Since I live in Gaza, I can answer your question. There are a lot of challenges facing us about plastic materials that are harmful to the environment. First, the Israeli occupation throws factories waste and wastewater in the sea water. Also, the residents throw plastic bags and plastic containers on the beach as well due to the lack of awareness about the environment, so I think we can raise awareness among the population and spread awareness campaigns And putting special containers for the trash in this way we can solve this problem.

I think my classmates and I with the help of out teacher can do a lot.We can launch a project on raising the awareness of people on the dangerous consequences of sea pollution. Firstly, we can start a research on the impact of plastic wastes and sewage water when thrown in the sea. Based on our research , we can come up with a ppt presentation or a video summing up out findings. We can include interviews with doctors, fishermen and other relevant people. We can also include suggestions on how to deal with the problem. Then, we can start an advocacy campaign to raise awareness on stopping throwing the plastic in the water, voluntary work to clean the beach, securing containers to throw waste in. If we can, we may meet people from the municipality calling for actions to help reduce this problem. Other members of the BNC can help suggesting additional actions.
I expect some challenges such as limitation of time at school to work on such project, but we can launch an online page so that we coordinate and work together at home after school. It might not be easy to meet staff from municipality or fishing union, but our teacher can help us of course as well as the school council.

Í think this project can be started as a school initiative. I proposed the idea and my teacher is very supportive. WE can plan for it carefully and we can seek advice from people we can reach. We can share our advocacy campaign in the BNC in a post if possible.
