Extreme Weather like wildfire, drought, heat wave, and hurricane are bad weather that happens either in a country or an area. The visible consequences of warming the world are extreme weather conditions. Extreme weather events include unusual, severe, or unseasonal weather. We could also say when a weather event is expressively different from the average or usual weather patterns. This could take place in a single event or over a period. Examples are droughts, tornados, hurricanes, wildfires etc. Studies has shown that water vapor in the atmosphere has in fact increased due to human activities. These activities by humans alter features of the atmosphere and affects weather patterns. Ghana, my beloved country ranks 8th among countries most hit by extreme weather. My country was hit by an extreme weather which was a flood in Kwame Nkrumah circle in the capital of Ghana Accra, the rain started on 1 June 2015. The cause of this flood was the heavy rains and because of the heavy carbon emissions, improper, planning of settlement in Accra, choked gutters which block the drainage system and a few other human factors. The floods had resulted in heavy traffic on the roads in the city and a halt in commercial activities as markets were flooded and workers trapped. At least 25 people have died from the flooding directly, while a petrol station explosion caused by the flooding killed at least 200 more people. On June 3, 2015, a Goil fuel station near Kwame Nkrumah Interchange was burnt with people and vehicles in the vicinity, especially in the northern parts, severe droughts and flooding have reduced agricultural productivity through loss of properties and investments. According to Ghana web on the 9th of November 2016, according to the 12th edition of the global climate risk index four out of the most impacted country globally are African. Mozambique, Malawi, Ghana, and Madagascar. In the southern parts of Ghana for instance, sea level rises another extreme weather condition have led to loss of lives, displaced communities, and low economic activities.

As mentioned early on, Human activities are the major cause of this altering of the climate which leads to extreme conditions. A lot of these activities are ones we cannot do without but can be managed. The best response is management or minimizing the extreme nature of some of these activities. So, we look at how to protect our communities from effects of climate changes and how to prevent them. We can start by ensuring communities have all they need to prepare for the effects of changing climates, Communities should combat extreme weather by 1. saving money for future disasters, move people from places to experience extreme weather, build better flood defenses in case there is a flood to experience or to happen. we could look at proper sewages systems and as we do these to make our communities more resilient, we have to address the problem from the roots as well i.e. we must try hard to reduce carbon pollution (fumes from old or overaged cars, industries) which fuels climate change. We do these by using energy more efficiently e.g. Cleaning up our power plants, rejecting dirty fuels like keystones, tar sand pipelines and increases our use of renewable energy.

Our Governments has big roles to play to this cause in various ways in creation of awareness among citizens by making citizens recognize the harshness of effects of extreme weather. Government should focus on both preventive and reactive actions. Preventive by inculcating the awareness in education curriculum of children from their primary stages. By also putting up policies that limits activities that fuel climate change eg channelling a percentage a percentage of all power plant capacity built in the country to come from the country. To come from winds. And there should be sets of energy efficiency standards and bodies set up to ensure that carbon emissions are reduced that is with regards to refrigerators, dishwasher etc. And since the activities limits but do not entirely prevent climate, Government must put up reactive measures too. Government must help family and businesses that were destroyed by the extreme weather because if they do not help the people affected thy will be homeless other will die of hunger.

The earth has been the only home for humanity, and it is our responsibility to make it conducive for our existence and maintain for future generation to come. People who have or have not experience extreme weather should always prepare for extreme weather to avoid destroying and killing. I think we as humans must have one vision with regards to this topic, and that is how to lessen these effects of extreme weather. All Governments must have policies to assist with these causes.
