WHY AREN'T MOST PEOPLE REACTING TO CLIMATE CHANGE WITH THE SAME URGENCY AS COVID-19?
To most people, climate change is not as serious as compared to COVID-19. COVID-19 is causing more harm around the globe. This caused the world to come together and fight against this mysterious virus that has caused a lot of mayhem within a shortest period of time. With the emergence of Corona virus, world leaders were forced to enact rules to protect and ensure the smooth administration of countries and protect human life's and properties.
The effect of Corona virus overwhelmed the very imagination of every human being and at a very point in time, the human race face one of the greatest struggle of all time where restrictions were placed on almost aspect of human life.
Cities were locked down, so many people around the globe lost their jobs, Schools were closed down and countries health care system were at risk as it was over burden with emergency cases which almost break down health care systems of countries around the globe.
The agriculture sector of countries like Ghana faced one of the worst crisis since when it couldn't even export most it's agricultural produce to the international market.
Moreover, most countries spent a lot of money as it incurred losses in tax revenue but at the same time, the world needed to spend much in catering for their citizens. A country like Ghana, has to give free water, food and electricity to her country men. This posed a lot of burden on the country's economy as the cost of living is going up.
Covid-19 has gained a lot of reactions from people around the world because of how rapidly it spread across the globe and put the world in a great deal of uncertainty because of the dangers of it reality unfolded to the face of the world.
Climate change is the change in global or regional climate patterns in particular a change apparent from the mid to late 20th century onwards and attributed largely to the increase levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide produced by the use of fossil fuels.
The effects of climate change has been debated and been attributed to a whole lot of activities. Research from NASA states that the mechanics of the Earth's climate system are simple. When the energy from the sun is reflected off the earth and back into space or when the Earth's atmosphere releases energy, the planet cools. When the Earth absorbs the sun's energy,or when atmospheric gases prevent heat released by the earth from radiating into space, the planet warms. A variety of factors, both natural and human influence the Earth's climate system.
Natural causes of climate change has been attributed to forces contribute to factors such as the sun's intensity, volcanic eruptions and changes in naturally occurring greenhouse gas concentrations.
Humans specifically, the greenhouse gas (G.H.S) emissions we generate are the leading cause of the Earth's rapidly changing climate. Greenhouse gases plan an important role in keeping the planet warm enough to inhabit. But the amount of these gases in our atmosphere has skyrocketed in recent decades. The burning of fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas for electricity, heat and transportation is the primary source of human generated emissions. A second source of deforestation, which releases sequestered carbon into the air. It is such that logging, clear-cutting,fires and other forms of forest degradation contribute up to global carbon emission.
Based on the causes of climate change, researchers has realized that the failure to mitigate to adapt climate change will be the most impactful risk facing community world wide. As climate change transforms global ecosystem, it affects everything from the places we live to the water we drink to the air we breathe.
As the Earth's atmosphere heats up, it collects ,retrains, and drops more water, changing weather patterns and making wet areas wetter and dry areas drier. Higher temperature worsen and increase the frequency of many types of disasters including storms, flood, heat waves and drought. These events can have devastating and costly consequences, jeopardizing access to clean drinking water, fueling out of control wildfires, damaging properties creating hazardous materials spills, polluting the air and leading to loss of life.
As the world debate on issues concerning COVID-19 and climate change, the world still believe that climate change takes a long period of time to release it's adverse effects. Even though, researches prove that climate change kills a lot of people in a year than COVID-19.In view of all these , the world still believes COVID-19 deserves their attentions as at now because of its immediate effects.
