Why aren’t people reacting to climate change as quickly as they did to covid-19?

Top tips:

  • To help answer this question, think about how urgent climate change is.
  • We want to hear about your experience where you live. The best comments will answer the question and explain why your experiences have led to your opinion. For example, I live in the UK where climate change doesn't cause as many deaths as covid-19, so people don't see such a direct and shocking impact...

    Hi it's observant_sparrow
I think people are not reacting as quickly to climate change because :
Firstly, COVID-19 can be fatal and it arouses instinctive fears. People react strongly to lethal threats, and although the virus appears to have a much lower death rate for healthy people under the age of 60,

Second, COVID-19 is a new threat. It has literally exploded in the face of the world, requiring obvious urgent action, as climate change has been on the radar for decades.

Although responses to COVID-19 require close international collaboration on public health, travel and border guidelines, countries can take effective measures to slow the spread of the coronavirus in their own territory.

Where I live Tunisians see that Covid 19 is new to them They are afraid of this new pandemic
Also the covid 19 can have a vaccine But there isn't a strategy to combat climate change like the strategy for the pandemic Besides Covid 19 has many benefits on our planet
    For example in our country:
*In Sousse the polluted air from factories reduce
*In Monastir the sea turtle returns to live in a clean environment
*In Sousse and Mahdia dolphins appear .

However , the climate change hasn't any benifits
For this my contry didn't react to climate change as quickly as she did to covid-19

In my opinion, I agree that climate change hasn't benefit because it has negative impacts like outbreak of tropical diseases, death and disapear of species from their natural habitat. Hence people and governments should take measures before it causes those effects.

    Hello, it's confident_perspective from Tanzania,
Most people are not reacting to climate change with the same urgency as covid19 because covid19 is the pandemic disease which spread within a short period of time. It spread easily to people because it is transmitted by touching things or people. Due to the way covid19 is transmitted it causes more negative impacts to people in a short period of time than the positive impacts for example covid19 cause 100,000 deaths in one day in country like Italy. While climate change does not give the negative impact within a short time as corona. Climate change might be resulting from human activities so people might know how to solve the problems of climate change.
Due to the fear of death people tend to take as quickly action as possible so as to save their lives. And they do forget that climate change is deadly and more dangerous than covid19.
I urge the governments and leaders all over the world to start taking serious actions concerning climate change as it can change the fate of the world. We have to try to educate as more people as possible on this problem so as to save our future generations.

    Hello
    I am funny_brain from Tanzania
Alot of people think that climatic change is not as dangerous as covid-19 because covid-19 spreads in large area like continent or the whole world for a short period of time and causes many problems like death which leads to the loss of man power than climate change.
But truth is climate change is very dangerous to the world as people will be affected a lot in all spheres of life that is economically, socially and politically.
Thus we should all help one another to bring changes to the world's climate.

    Hello,
I think people are not reacting to climate change as quickly as covid-19 because covid19 led to the decline of economy in the whole world. This is because a lot of money was and still is used to buy vaccine and other medical equipment to help people to prevent themselves against this disease.
While climate change does not lead to the decline of economy and the governments don't concentrate mostly in saving money for solving climate change problems.
People don't see climate change as that serious because it happens slowly without even noticing it.
I advice the governments and other leaders around the world to take action so as to solve the climate change problems.

    Hello everyone,
    I am lovely-cello
On the matter of urgency most people think that covid-19 have many effect than climate change because a number of people died of covid-19 while climate change can not cause death easily than covid-19.
The other effect is loss of man power because a large number of people are dead and leads to the drop down of production hence economic drop diwn.
While climate change does not affect our economy that fast.
I do advice people to take actions to help solve the climate change problems by planting trees and other environment friendly activities.
    Thank you.

    Hi,
    I am precious_market
People do react with urgency to covid19 rather than climate change because with covid-19 disease people are afraid as it causes death of many people in a short period of time and it is transmitted through a simple touch. While climate change does not cause death to people in a short period. But in real sense climate change may one day kill many people and lead to destruction of the world. Thus, the government has to start taking measures by advising their people and making advertisement so that we can all start to change our lifestyles and save the world.
This begins with us the youth, we should all come together and help change the world's climate.

    Hi,
it's openminded_passionfruit from Mbulani secondary school in Tanzania (East Africa)
People react to covid19 in urgency because covid19 is pandemic disease which spread within a short time and it cause death of many people and other negative impacts like decline of economy in the world. People used and still use a lot of money to buy instrument for treatment while climate change is not pandemic disease and does not cause death for most people. This is why most people are not afraid of it.
The fact is climate change will eventually destroy the whole world and end our generation at once.
Therefore, as we all want to live in a better world we should come together and help each other fight climate change which is a bigger threat to our lives than covid19 is.
As the future of this world we have to stary now taking actions to help our environment and save our lives and that of our future children.

    hello
    Iam cultured_hurricane
People take covid19 seriously because they fear it as it has more harm than climate change. This is why the government as well as the people individually took measures to prevent themselves from coronavirus. People fear a lot because the disease has no cure. The government took quick measures because the disease affected every country's economy. It affected the following sectors in our country; tourism sector, agricultural sector as well as industrial sector. This affected peoples lives as well as the country's economy at large.
People should start to take climate change seriously because it has a huge effect to the world. And climate change effect are unnoticeable. They can not be seen that easily, and when they start showing it will be too late.
We can all do our part to help solve these problems.
It begin with me and you.
    then the world will follow.
Let us all come together and solve this climate puzzle.

    Hi!
It's true that people don't react to climate change urgently as they do to covid19 because covid19 is a deadly disease and many people around the world fear it.
The government used a lot of money to take preventive measures such as making face masks for hospital workers, to advertise on Televisions and radios, making posters around schools. Thus people feared coronavirus as it is deadly.

On the other hand people do not fear climate change as it is not yet deadly, it has not killed so many people so far. But I do believe that climate change will cause a lot of harm in the near future.
People should start taking actions to prevent the world from experiencing the deadly effects of climate change.
We should all be aware of the problems associated with climate change . W e should also educate the people around us even our parents on the climatic change problems and ask them to start acting friendly to the environment. They should stop destroying the environment.
We can do it, together we can change the world

    Hi.!
    I am focused_leaf
I agree that most people do not react to climate change with the same urgency as covid19 because people believe that climate change is easier to find solution to for example when people cut down trees this can cause drought and the solution is to plant more trees. When one cut one tree then one must plant five trees.
On the other hand covid19 killed many people in the world and this created fear among people. This is why the government started to react quickly so as to save people's lives.
In reality climate change has more effects than covid19. As when it will strike no one will remain a live.
This is why everyone should be responsible and take care of our environment. Awareness and education is still needed among people so that we can do this as one.
We should all sing the same song that is preserving our natural resources and our environment.

I agree that climate change happen over a period of time and it has a lot of effects. It can cause drought due to deforestation process when people cut down trees. Also climate change cause the occurrence of some tropical diseases like malaria and typhoid. When the temperature is high, it leads to the reproduction of mosquito which cause malaria than during low temperature.

I believe people feel more threatened by Covid-19 as it has killed many in larger countries that are more likely to have the resources to stop Climate Change, therefore people see it as a threat nowadays. As well as this, Covid was an instant problem, while Climate Change has been stewing for a while and so far has killed less people. Lastly, Covid threatened the economy, something that many people hold dear. That is why I feel Climate Change has been neglected.

    Hello,
It's true that people don't regard climate change as an emergency. They tend to neglect it as it doesn't show immediate effect.
They neglect it although it is very dangerous to the world and the environment at large.
But covid-19 killed many people within a short period of time and created fear among people.
Covid-19 has affected our country economically, socially and politically since people were not allowed to have gatherings, others stayed indoors to save their lives while others couldn't perform their political duties like the members of parliament.
Believe it or not we all should take climate change serious. Destroying our environment carelessly will eventually lead us to our death slowly. This will not let anyone survive. We will become the victims of our own actions. We should start to work on preserving our environment as covid-19 did to some countries.

We are more bothered about covid-19 because it is not effecting anybody at the moment, so they pass it off a small issue. The big problem is that the world leaders are still negleting the covid-19 situation, this means that attention is being driven off the less important issues. Also the covid-19 is fast and immediate thing but climate change happens faster and it was K***ing people too. However it is not a small thing at must be dealt with now, because by destroying the planet your leaving the next generation a dumpster to be turned into a building.

people aren't reacting quickly to climate change as they did in the pandemic because: 1. people are concerned about coranavirus because it is a new threat and climate change has been pushed out of the way to deal with keeping people safe and developing a vacine. 2. climate change has been around for a while, and lots has been done before to try and stop it, so people are not reacting to it any more or sadly not greatly informed about it. 3. in about ten years covid may not still exist however so will lots of different species (over a million) be around.

Firstly, because Coranavirus is a lethal and easily-spread virus, many people made it their priority rather than protecting the planet. Because climate change takes quite a long time to affect people, many people turned their backs to the planet as we went into lockdown.
Secondly, coronavirus kills people, whilst climate change doesn't seem to harm humans.
However, I think that our planet is equally important as covid 19 so we should help protect our planet.

I think people aren't reacting to climate change as quickly as covid-19 because they don't see it as a huge threat. The pandemic was a new problem that took over the globe in a short amount of time; this was a huge threat to mankind. Covid-19 can kill people in a little time while climate can kill people but only during a long period of time. Also, climate change has been a problem for a long time unlike covid-19. Most people have forgotten about climate change because of everything that is going on,

People reacted fast to covid19 compared to climate change because covid19 caused world fast depopulation. For example a country like Italy faced a huge depopulation due to covid-19.
Other countries people could not afford to buy face masks and sanitizers.
While climate change happens slowly. This caused a lot of effects to our environment as time went by. For example in national parks and zoo animals lacked food.

    Hello,

    am focused_leaf from Tanzania,

In my country covid 19 brought political, social and economic effects.

People reacted by wearing face masks, others stayed home and washing hands frequently.

Economically, the country faced economic drop down since people didn't go to work and this caused the decrease in production. Some shops were closed as well as small industries.

Politically, before covid 19 people were able to meet and discuss different political issues. But after covid 19 political parties could't meet to do some discussion on the matters of the country.

Socially, people couldn't meet for celebrations or social works. Since they all had to stay out of gatherings. Hence social issues and cultural issues came to a stand still.

But I believe we all have learnt a great lesson of not taking things to our advantage. We should take every chance that we get in life seriouslly so as to achieve whatever we want in our lives.

It begins with you and me.
