Live Q&A with Najma and Chris from The Green Economy Coalition

On Tuesday May 11th we hosted our first Global Conversation Live event - read more about it here, with over 250 logins to the Zoom call and (we think) over 600 students!

During the event, we crossed live to Chris Hopkins and Najma Mohamed from The Green Economy Coalition. They try to help countries speed up the move to greener and fairer ways of doing things. They make bridges between business, people and governments. They aim to stimulate debate and dialogue and help connect people to make better decisions for our planet.

We asked Chris and Najma some of the questions you had submitted on the Hub, and also got to ask some posed live! You can watch their responses below and add your comments at the bottom!

What does the Green Economy Coalition do?
Tom @ the BNC

How many countries take part in your coalition and is there any hope that these countries are making progress in building back greener?
brilliant_cloud, Junior Secondary School, Gwagwalada, Nigeria

What is the best way to stimulate debate about the environment?
selfassured_journalist, Manor Park Primary Academy, UK

You've got to find out what people have in common. So find out what we all care about... and then speaking about the actions we take for the environment can create better jobs, healthier air and clean water

Najma Mohamed on stimulating debate

How do you feel when you help businesses collaborate with each other to help fight climate change?
eager_reflection, Cheam Park Farm Primary Academy, UK

Your slogan is “Dialogue works, Inclusion matters”. Does this mean that you believe the general public should be involved and “included” in bigger discussions and debates about our environment? What do you think the challenges will be regarding working with such a big group of people – is it possible to unite all and form one voice?
patient_truth, Boutcher C of E Primary School, UK

What role do world leaders play in tackling climate change?
Asked during the live event

How long do you think it will be before people start reacting to climate change with urgency?
Asked by content_eagle during the live event

What can people do to make a difference to climate change?
Asked by lovable_lobster during the live event

I can't tell you how many of the real senior decision-makers we speak to who say "we've heard people marching and speaking outside of our Parliament and it made us stop and it made us think"

Chris Hopkins on how to make a difference

Do you think social media can help people discover environmental problems and make a difference?
Asked during the live event

How can we improve education to raise awareness of climate change?
Asked during the live event

After the event, Chris also told us that alhough the Green Economy Coalition don’t work with schools, they run "youth sets the agenda" workshops with youth environental groups who are speaking to business leaders, and the business leaders find it very powerful! Also, Chris recommends thar students check out Action for Conservation (they are UK based) for ideas about how to make a difference in this area.

Once again thank you to Chris and Najma for joining us! And thanks to everyone for their questions. We were so glad we squeezed so many in.

  • What have you learnt from Chris and Najma's answers?
  • What could you do to encourage others to work together on climate change?
  • Do you have any more questions based on the answers you've already heard?

Really, I learned a lot here, thanks to everyone who provided me with information. In summary, I learned that serving nature is very important and that it will benefit us.
If we preserve nature, it will give us a lot of its bounties
But if we don't, we have to bear the consequences
As it did to us when humans increased the production of harmful emissions, whether from factories or car exhaust, etc.,
And increase the consumption of plastic - which is difficult to get rid of -, deforestation and building buildings
As a result, temperatures have risen dramatically, leading to climate changes that reflect its impact on our natural life, as we have seen the California fires, the shrinking of Lake Chad, and the melting of ice in the Arctic.
So we can do a lot to save the planet
To cultivate more and make our thoughts go towards everything that is green, we can spread awareness about that phenomenon so that we can work hand in hand in a spirit of cooperation so that we get faster and better results
We can support green research with money so that it can be implemented and utilized in our world
Once you are an advocate of environmental protection, it is a very interesting and useful matter that works to direct companies and institutions towards goals that benefit nature and stay away from pollutants and what hinders the slowing of climate change. Najma Mohamed told us
That the social media can help people discover environmental problems and make a difference, so
    **I can be one conservationist
I can open my YouTube channel to present videos showing information about the environment, its protection, its effects on living organisms, the problems our planet faces, and how to work to save it.
Diversity in the method of presentation can be made using various art, whether by drawing, acting, comic show, designing cartoon videos, stories, songs, pictures ,,,,
My message will be clear, covering all different age groups, and I look forward to success and awareness in the world in this regard

I will encourage my follow mate or colleagues in many ways to build back greener by making campaign on it by educating others who do not have any knowledge about the climate change
