Speech responding to the motion: ' All decisions that affect society should be decided by direct democracy'

This motion states that all decisions that affect society should be decided by direct democracy. Direct democracy is a form of democracy in which people decide on policy initiatives directly. I oppose this motion because of several reasons.

Firstly, MPs are trained to understand tricky subjects that we wouldn't. If we were to vote on a tricky subject, most people wouldn't know what it's about. However, it is the MPs' job to understand all kinds of politics. For example, Theresa May's deal was 585 pages long. MPs had to read all of this. Whereas, most of us wouldn't have the time to read it, and if we did, we probably wouldn't have understood it. This my first reason why this motion is a bad idea.

Secondly, we don't have the time to vote almost every single day. We need to go to work instead of going to polling stations. Are we going to waste all our time voting? In the Houses of Parliament, MPs take around six votes everyday. We do not have the time to take six votes every single day. After a while, people wouldn't bother to vote and only a small number of people would. They could potentially control the government. Some people might say that nothing gets decided in Parliament as we were due to leave the EU on the 29th March but it was delayed. However, one referendum takes around four weeks. This is my second reason.

Finally, referendums cost millions of pound. We have seen this happen in the Brexit referendum. The whole vote costed £130 million. We cannot aford this amount of money. Are we going to waste this much money? This is my last reason.

I hope you understand why this motion is a bad idea and why I oppose it. I hope I have persuaded you as well.

    Hi extraordinary_avocado,

This is a really clear final piece, well done. You've used relevant evidence to support the reasons you give. This makes your argument stronger!

I love your final piece (even if I am on the opposite side)
I just want to tell you something:
    1) The money for the public voting may be £130 million but its worth it! People should have the right to decide on what they think. The people of Britain should be part of the decision that affects Britain.
    2) It doesn't matter if the public isn't trained on voting. If the decisions affect the people, the people should be encouraged to say what they think and have access to all resources to make informed decisions. As you can see, decisions should certainly be made with direct democracy.
