Street Art: Good or bad?

The Arts Featured image 6

There are lots of different types of art, be it on the stage, or on the streets. But, have you ever thought if some art could be on the more negative side? Or if all art is good?

This is a very short post but a great discussion starter, which is why I have published it. Would you like to start by sharing what you think?

Thank you, Olivia. I was meant to press 'Save Draft' which is why it is so short.
Here is what I think on street art and how it is portrayed:
When you look at street art, you usually see colourful pictures and graffiti. But, do you ever wonder why they have chosen to draw or write that specific piece of work? All art has a meaning, from on the stage telling a story, to in a gallery showing how the world has changed over time. Street art has a meaning to; weather its just colours or a detailed picture. It might be telling a happy story, or a sad one; negative or good. But most street art is social commentary, the wall is the canvas and the artist is sharing their thoughts on the world through pictures. Most street art is good and not like graffiti where the people who are drawing on the walls are just doing it for fun. Street art tells a story; portrays thoughts and shows them through art for all to see.
This is what I think of street art, and as much as there can be negative, good always shines through with art.

Thanks for your answer. I've given you a star for your use of reasons to support your view. I'd like to see whether you can be open-minded about graffiti artists "drawing on the walls for fun". Do you think this is always true? Perhaps you could find out why people do it. Some people might think it's vandalism or just a hobby but are there any other reasons?

I feel as if some art is a crime and some has a meaning to it. People who do it with no meaning to it should be charged but where as if someone did it with a meaning and everyone loved it and appreciated it it would not be a crime.

Wow! Can you explain this further.

I think that "some art is a crime" and "people who do it with no meaning should be charged" are two different point.

      Can you explain:
      1. Why is some art a crime? Can you give examples?
      2. Do you think people who do any kind of art without meaning should be criminalised or just graffiti artists? Why?

In my opinion, art is a way of expressing yourself, the same why speak is. To take away our ability to express ourselves would be wrong. Everyone expresses themselves differently and they should not be targeted for it.

Are there ever instances when we shouldn't allow people to express themselves? Can you think of examples where this might cross the line?

I think if someone’s ‘freedom of speech’ is dehumanising someone else just because of who they are is wrong. Because life is one of the most valuable things, and to say other people’s lives are not as important because of they race, gender, sexuality or anything really, is so discriminatory towards them.

I wonder whether you can find some examples where art has been produced in response to discrimination. Whilst you can't post the pictures on the Hub (for copyright reasons), you could explain the story behind the artworks and provide a link for others to see.

I think street art is just as valid to any other way of expressing yourself, as long as you are doing the art were you legally can, I see no problem and don’t understand why others would. A lot of graffiti often brings a powerful message, especially to do with politics witch is a big deal in modern society and it is important to be exposed to it. To criminalise all graffiti would be like banning freedom of speech. Everyone expresses themselves differently, to criminalise a certain way of expressing yourself just because you don’t agree with it is wrong.

I think that it is bad because when people just do it for fun, it might be quite annoying for other people who live near that street. But I do also think that it is a good thing, like intrepid_hurricane said it might tell you a story, or somebody’s thoughts which some people might like to look at. So it depends on the meaning and it could make the person who has made their own street art feel happy about sharing their thoughts with other people.

Street art isn't necessarily as bad as you think.
It can be good because of many different reasons - Each and every piece of art has a meaning or purpose whether the artist know it or not. It is a way of being yourself. If has a positive effect on the citizens and shows how unique each and everyone of us is. Street art keeps the urban areas and there residents energised and inspired. Some owners allow there buildings to have street art on it as it keeps the city beautiful and revived rather than destroyed.
It can be bad though - Making art on illegal walls or someone else's property without leaving a note before hand is a crime. But this shouldn't stop people from doing it.

If graffiti is done illegally it doesn't mean the art itself is bad. In my opinion there is no difference between good art and bad art. 'Bad art' is just another way of saying 'its not my type' or 'I don't really like it' just in a different more carless way.

I think street art is bad. Based on my first ever post 'Are spray paints burning our world?' does portray quite a handful of reason why street art is harmful to our earth which may have been why extreme weather has commenced. Especially at these times, spray art would not be helpful at all for elderly people and people with asthma and low immune systems as it would wear out there body trying to fight off the toxins of the fumes spray art emits on top of protecting itself from covid-19. Street art is also re-called as vandalising and it is not quite pleasant covering someone else's art with yours not to mention that it is against the law in some countries. Therefore, street art isn't quite that nice especially when we kill 15.3 billion trees to benefit us and street art posters and other entities may be the cause of that. Also, some types of art can be a crime. For example, a knife, gun, or grenade is something that is used in crimes. Therefore, art can have its downsides behind all its vivid colours and brightness. In conclusion, this is why I think art is bad.

Yes. For example, posters for the extinction rebellion that motivates people to make a change to climate change. There are also ads on bus stops that advertise beneficial things.

While I strongly agree with memorable Orchards points about how street art can be harmful to the human body and the planet I do think that it is important to consider that street art is also a way of getting your voice heard. While graffiti could be seen as vandalism, it also can have huge meaning like for example: when I went to Germany we visited the wall that separated FDR and GDR, people were not allowed to escape GDR, anyone who did was shot. There is lots of graffiti on that wall that was sprayed at the time of FDR and GDR, a lot of it expresses peoples feelings about how there should be change, some portray the pain and sadness of many as they try and fail to get out of GDR. Graffiti can express a point of view, it can raise awareness. More safe and Eco spray could be produced, spray that does not harm the body, it could be made out of plants etc.

Cave People original started drawing on cave walls so original you could say that art was originally just on the walls, but now we have canvasses and paper to paint on, should we do it? I believe that sometimes it is wrong such as putting your name on a monument. In the future people may not see things as we see them because of all the graffiti on them, if everyone did street art everywhere then no one would see itas a good thing they will just get bored of it.

However sometimes it can be good and be used to express your feelings if your thinking about the bigger picture. I also think that Versatile Molecule has a very strong point that it helps to show peoples emotions from the past (the example being the Berlin Wall). The suffragists and the suffragettes got women the right to vote; the suffragists used peaceful protests but the suffragists motto was "deeds not words" and they smashed windows chained themselves to railings and some even died for the cause ( notible Emily Davison who leaped under the king's horse on Darby Day dieing a few days later.). They would of also done graffiti.

In my opinion street art can be good and bad it just depends if it is art or graffiti. Some people claim what they have done is art, but sometimes it can just be a easy get away. eg. Someone stuck a banana to a wall.

I think street art is fine because it is legal on public street but not on people's property although in 1971 I think it was considered criminal damage.

Well I feel like every art is unique including street art.I don’t think it is good or bad since it could have its upside downs like when it’s done illegally but I don’t think it’s a crime trying to spread the thing you love to the world and showing it in an unique way.But you must ask permission before you go doing it on someone else’s land or territory.Or if you like doing this than go to some road that the owners allow you too or else it’s unfair if your doing it on people’s land without them knowing or without them liking it.Just remember like radical_koala said there is not something like there is nothing like “bad art” it’s only that maybe it’s not your type or personally you think it’s not what you imagined. There are so many ways people can put their art through to the world like many other people like to draw and post it street art is one of them.

No.No one has the right of calling someone else’s art bad.You might call it bad because it’s not your style or what you imagined but you never get the right to call someone’s art bad because of that. Every single art piece is unique even if they have the same title or by different people you will see differences.Every art by every person is unique you can’t just say it’s bad because you think yours is better. Every art is unique like every human.

there are two types of street art one of which someone gets permission or gets paid to do it (in the law) and the other one being graffiti some people think neither is acceptable I think not graffiti can be beautiful but it is very wrong and the inside law street is normally done by professionals and is normally beautiful this is my opinion and I know other people will have other views so feel free to comment I really don't mind disagreements so feel free to!

Street art can be good and bad but it does depend where you do it and if you have asked first. If you have permission it is legal, if street art has not been given permission it is illegal.

Street art can be bad because people doing could be doing it on somebody’s property or workplace for example. Also it can be bad because some people don’t make cool pictures they put something rude instead. It can be good though because sometimes it can be really pretty and some people might ask for it to be done on their property.
