Is it impossible to define "art"?

Thinking-Question.jpg

People have argued for centuries about what 'art' is. You're now joining these debates through your Burnet News Club sessions!

There have been lots of different ideas:

....some say that if something is recognised as art, that makes it art

....some say art must be a result of a deliberate decision to make art

....others have argued that if an artwork shares a feature with another existing piece of art, then its also art

Some people argue there are too many kinds of art to come up with an overall definition, and a meaning that covers everything is impossible to pin down.

What do you think of the definitions above? Are any of them good enough to cover all art? And ultimately...

Is it impossible to define "art"?

I think that it is impossible to define art because there are so many forms of art including drawing, dance routines, gardens and even furniture because if it is beautifully designed then I think it is a form of art. People will have so many different opinions on what art is because it is freedom and can be whatever you wish. Some people’s desire is completely different to others so the boundaries of art is limitless. Art can be created at any moment by anyone.

This is an interesting comment. Do you think that all gardens, or all dance routines are art? If so, why? If not, what links the ones together that tip them over into the "art" category?

I think that not all gardens are art but gardens that people have designed and made beautiful is art like gardens used in Chelsea flower show that have been created and a lot of effort has been used to keep it nice rather than a garden that has plants rotting because they haven’t been looked after. On the other hand, in art some people can create art but art ,in my opinion, doesn’t have to be perfect and beautiful because everyone can create art, but not everyone is good at creating art but it may not be good art but it is still art.

No. I do not think it is possible to define art. There are many different types of art varying from merely a 3-year-old's drawing to an explicit landmark. Just like people, art will age meaning the figure will not be the same as it was a long while ago. Every second, a piece of art changes. Even while you are composing it. Though this may not be visible for the human eye to notice instantly, the segment of art is not that definition form before. For example, take a game like Fortnite. It will have it's nimble alters and updates until it is a whole different thing, something else from what it was clarified as beforehand. In addition to my recent remark, a definition is a long term and precise explanation of something therefore it is expected to stay the same according to the definition otherwise is is something else. Therefore, you cannot define art as the definition will not be as precise and some pieces of art are a very though-provoking and complex thing to describe such as nothing. Yes, nothing can be art. Following from the google definition of "art" it is something that expresses the author's creative idea/s. Therefore, there creativity could be nothing at all! Another reason something can be nothing is that if it isn't preserved properly. If an artifact is left in a museum for a long period and isn't kept in the correct way, it would decapitate and become into merely nothing. Therefore, art cannot be defined because it slowly changes over time, giving it a different title.

    Thank you for reading.

A very interesting explanation memorable_orchard! I think you might have meant depreciate instead of decapitate though...

Oh, yes. I meant that. I wasn't too sure about what word to put because it was at the tip of my tongue. Thank you for the new word though, Katie!

I think that it is impossible to define Art because is you saw a 5 year old's drawing, you might not think its art or you might think that its not good but to them and lots of others it could be a masterpiece. There are different types of art like abstract paintings or just a simple drawing but what matters is what you think of it, some people might not like it but some will. Its everyone's own opinion on what they define as art.

That's an interesting thought - could you give an example of what sort of art you could eat?

In my opinion its not impossible to define art because when I think of art I picture letting my imagination out even if I am not good at art its a way you can express yourself without using your power of your voice. Also if you are bored like some of us are here in quarantine you start doing some art and it passes time on and it will make you more relaxed and then you will be in a calm environment. Advice= Do some art such as colouring before you go to bed and it will help you get to sleep quicker. However, I think defining art is impossible because art is all around us and there are many different types of art which some people don't know the meaning too.

I like the image that "letting your imagination out" creates.

What about when people create accidental art? For example, you might do something without thinking, like spill a tin of paint on some wood that leaves a beautiful pattern. Is this art? Or do we always need intention and imagination for something to be "art"?

I'm learning to make manga, so in the process, I've practised my art skills. I personally think, it is impossible to define 'art' as art could be something made out of solid objects, or something drawn. As long as you call it 'art' then I think that's all that matters.

So in conclusion, I'm trying to say art could be anything.

Although some people think it isn't possible to define it, think that 'Art' means anything where you are creative. That could include: Dance, Origami, Painting, Drawing, Music etc. In all of these tasks, or activities, you are creative, because you create something (eg. In dance, you create some choreography, when doing Origami, you create a figure from paper etc.).
In conclusion, I think Art can be defined as anything creative.

I think it is possible to define art as you can describe lots of objects as art. they can be on everyday items such as plates, carpets and curtains or paintings could hang on walls at museums and houses. It could be a fun activity you created with your imagination or a dance routine. I Consider art as everything creative and imaginative.

I think everything is art, all things have their own beauty. Regardless of whether it was deliberate or natural, everything has it's rightful place in the world of art. Art can be anything you want it to be, even if no-one else thinks it is art, if it is to you, then it is to you. To start, art is about opinion, like it's a person's choice what music they like or the clothes that they where. Art is a abstract term, it is a expression of creativity, nature's natural beauty, someone's own tastes, that song you loved or anything that you want it to be. It is impossible to define art, as art can be anything, art is beauty, passion, dedication, craftsmanship and so much more. Art cannot be defined, only admired, inspired or created.
