The American Election

Interviewer: Can you tell me a bit about yourself?

Harriet: Hi, my name is Harriet Matthews and I live in California. I am 32 and my occupation is a doctor.

Interviewer: How do you feel about tomorrow's election?

Harriet: I feel a bit excited and slightly nervous. I mean it's not every day a new president is elected in America.

Interviewer: Why should people vote tomorrow?

Harriet: People should vote tomorrow because every vote makes a difference and if you don't try then you'll never know what could have been? Everyone has the power to make a difference here so vote now! Being president is a huge thing so if you don't vote now you'll be left to wait another four years until the next election.

Interviewer: Who are you voting for and how powerful is your vote?

Harriet: Well If you didn't know, I'm voting for Biden because I care about Climate Change and if you heard Donald Trump talk on the TV he has stated he does not treat this problem with awareness wheras Biden actually is willing to help save the planet which we are all living on. My vote is powerful because my state (California) is worth 55 electoral votes so that will hopefully help determine who is going to win the election.

Interviewer: Why do some people not vote?

Harriet: Some people don't vote for plenty of different reasons because they might have problems reaching their polling station, being underaged, simply not bothering to vote and some people who are voting by post can't because the post offices have been shut.

Interviewer: Would you ever run for president?

Harriet: Would I ever run for president? Are you seriously asking me that? OF COURSE NOT!!! Being President is a huge responsibility. Plus I'm only 32! All presidents have to be over 35 to run for president.

Interviewer: How do you feel about the voting system in America?

Harriet: I think the voting system is unfair because say if one president ( Hillary Clinton) won the popularity vote another president ( Donald Trump) won the electoral votes and therefore became president. Also Donald Trump is head of Fox News which tricks us all into believing every word he says.

I like how your reasons about science link to the job of your character! I also wish you had said more about Fox News at the end- what do you think your character thinks of this TV station and why? Donald Trump is not in charge of Fox News but it does appear to be one of his favourite TV stations.

My character does not trust Fox News because you can never believe every word they say. This works just like other types of news around the world sometimes what they say isn't always exactly the truth. But thankfully there are other newspapers/news channels/ news around which are reliable and trustworthy.

Do you have evidence to support your claim that "you can never believe every word" that Fox News say, understanding_contribution?
