Should you be able to stay on to president in America for longer?

Featured Image US Election 5

In America, candinates are only allowed to stay on for 8 years. Is this fair? Should they add on more years if they’re happy?

Yes, they should add on more years.

Yes, they should add on more years if the majority of the country agree that they would rather have a politician that was kept or not. The people should have the power over who is their new leader, not the other politicians wanting a change. If this person is perfect to run this country and are keeping the country out of danger, then they should stay on as they have claimed they can do a brilliant role of their job. This is a good opportunity as people should believe that this person would help them be brought back together again, not just being taken off their duty because they have to. This rule should be inforced the other way as the candinates should have a minimum of 4 years before being chosen to be kept on the running or taken off for a new person.

No, they should keep it on 8 years maximum.

8 years should be the maximum as the person might be overwhelmed with the amount of power being given to him each day and they might start being greedy if people would still vote for them. Everyone should be kept on for eight years as if you were a citizen or currently running candinate you might see something that the president has not, as they have their mind in other business. If people get frustrated that the person isn’t doing anything after 12 years in charge but they have to wait years for the next referendum, many people would ignore their rules or cause riot if they aren’t happy. That wouldn’t happen though if there was only 8 years. My final reason is, if the rich people were happy because their business were getting the priority and lots of money but the poor weren‘t getting as much respect as the rich but didn’t get any profit, would be the result in that?

My opinion.

I think the law should be kept in place as some people won’t be happy, like how Franklin D. Roosevelt was on for 12 years. This should be fair as no one would agree that one person is perfect for this role as even the best can make very stupid mistakes. However, this doesn’t mean that less candinates should apply as they would only be on for 8 years or less, as this rule is to make sure the community or country would not be angry with the lack of choice from a bigger city. My final point is that 8 or less years rule is there to make sure you don’t feel power crazy.

This is a really good example of a post, storytelling_king - plenty of opinion and reasons which give others lots to discuss. You've shown good problem-solving by weighing up pros and cons, and also spoken up with your own opinion. Could you find out who introduced "term limits" - the rule that meant a president can only stay in power for eight years maximum?

In my opinion there should be a vote on whether or not this president should be president for four more years as then we can get a kind of get a fair judgment from the public. I understand some people will not want this person as president which is why I think it would be a good idea to have a vote so we can know what the majority would rather. I do not think that the maximum should be eight years because like Barack Obama some people have helped change our world and has helped us in many ways. So they deserve to carry on helping our planet. But if we did a vote people who do not like the president can vote off then we could see what the fair majority want. So then the decision can be based of peoples vote.

I think that presidents should be allowed to stay for more than 8 years because the citizens could probably tell if they were going to be power crazy.

I think presidents should stay for 8 years or less because if they have a long reining as president, the may go crazy with power and I don't think that would be good for the country or the citizens.

In my opinion, I believe that presidents should be allowed to stay for more than 8 years, because the citizens can have time to decide whether they will help the country in a good way, and not abuse their powers. So they can decide if they should continue being their President. Now, some can change history in a way like Barack Obama, and how he helped America and the rest of the world in a good way. He also gave people more rights and more abilities in education, employment .etc.

I think it should be each year the presidents change because it's good to have somebody different for a change because then there could be good ideas.

I agree with you storytelling_king. I also think that a president could stay on for longer. If America liked their president, and they wanted to keep him/her for longer, then yes, I think they should. I also think it should be maximum eight years because you can not stay on there for ever, and other people also need the chance too. They could also make a brilliant president too. Thank you for reading my comment! protective_dusk.

I think there should be no limits to presidential terms. People should continue to vote to keep a president or vote them out, every four years. So in that way, if a president was really good like Obama they can continue to rule America until they are voted out.

I think it really unfair you only have 4 year to stay as president because I’m use an example Barack Obama he was a very good president and so was all off the rest of the 44 president of America. People really liked Barack Obama and certain people from different states really wanted him to stay for longer but unfortunately his time was up and he could stay for any longer and obviously Trump took over so I think America could have at least let a president stay president for at least 6 or more years to try and see were the country will end up so I think it would be a good try for the, to try!

Yes, 4 years isn't long for being president, they should extend it to about 7.5 years.

I think it's fair so inspiring young people can take the job and if the economy isn't going well or the president is overall just bad I think a switch- up would be good

I don't think there should be a limit of how many years you can rule in America because the people need to vote for the person they want to be president and who they rightfully want.

I personally think that 8 years is too long. Allthough less than 8 years might not give people the chance to do the thing they have promised people to do I think if they were really up to the job i think they would get lots of people to help do what they promised to do.

Personally,I agree because they might be a good president and can treat people good but then when it’s election for presidents they might vote for another president and that president might treat people badly

I actually think that there should be a vote on whether the American President could stay for more than 4 years and it really got me thinking because if the president was realy nice mabye they could stay for longer but if the president wasn't so nice they might only stay in for 2 or 3 years. You might be thinking why there would a president that wasn't the nicest if the people had voted then in. Well, one candiate might have more votes than the other candiate but not get in because only the electorical votes count-electorical votes are like a mini vote in each state. You might also be thinking that it is unfair because some presidents get more time in a term than others. This can be fixed by simply voting once or mabye voting every 12 years (3 full presidental terms) if people change their minds or people want the vote more frequently.

This is an interesting idea, emotional_night and you've given reasons for why you think it's a good plan. Remember presidents can stay on for more than 4 years - they can be re-elected for another 4 like Donald Trump is trying to od now. Can anyone find out when "term limits" were brought in, and before that had any president served more than two terms?

In America Term limits were enforced in 1940 when Franklin Roosevelt explicitly broke it but before no major effort to avoid it took place. The 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified in 1951 formally establishing in law the two-term limit—although it did not apply to the incumbent Harry Truman.
