Is it fair that criminals can't vote but can campaign to be president??

Is it fair that people can not vote from prison but can campaign to be president. Roughly two presidents have had criminal records and campaigned from jail.........but is it fair.
What we think is that they can not be trusted. Roughly two people have campaigned to be presidents from jail with a criminal record Eugene v. Debs and La Rouche Should the be trusted because with a criminal record they could say they have changes but still be a bad person. But what if the person has been wrongly arrested and they can't vote think about it.
IS IT FAIR???

Although this is a short post, it starts an interesting new discussion and therefore has been published so that everyone else can share their views!

No it is not fair.

Frankly, I don't think it's fair at all.
Can you say why, hardworking_introduction? It's really important to give our reasons!
It isn't fair because criminals and prisoners still live in the country and are Americans, so should have every right to say their opinion on who they want to run their country. If a criminal was voted as president, imagine what havoc they could cause. To be president you need a lot of knowledge which most criminals dont have. Also they might change laws or somehow get their fellow prisoners out of prisons and cause total chaos
oh thats true

Like everyone in the dicussion has said, I believe it isn't fair. Maybe they should be allowed to vote for the president, but not run. Who knows what they can do with the power they could have?
I agree ,I think that you should be able to vote but not be president, because just to vote doesn't do very much but if you were president, then you would have loads of power and you could do terrible things to the country, make bad laws , and make silly decisions!
I agree they should not be able to run for president but depends what you did on voting for who should be president

I think it isn’t fair in the prison there should be a vote room
23 Sep 2020
Unless they’ve done something terrible I think they should be able to vote.
That's an interesting idea, inspired_dove. How would you decide what's considered a terrible crime and what's not? Do you think it's fair to decide who can vote based on the type of crime that has been committed?

I don't think it is fair. If you have committed a crime but now want to be a better person and vote for who you believe will be the best you can't. Where as if you wanted to be president and run a campaign from jail you could. If you are doing a campaign from jail you might not have thought about how to be a better person and make some bad changes and rules. Therefore by the current rules some people will not have there say which is very unfair.

I don’t think it is fair because a criminal is allowed to run the country but can’t have a say in who becomes president.
I think it’s quite silly because they a in prison they are allowed to run for president and rule America which is huge and be the most important person in the world. They could make silly suggestions and rules that could make America awful.
I think they should be allowed to vote though because they are still an American citizen and they still live in that country so it’s not fair if they don’t have a say in who becomes president.

I don't think that it is fair that they get to run but I do think that it is fair they can vote too
Why do you think that
because they could run and do bad things

I don’t think it is fair. Prisoners should be able to vote but not run for president as no one knows what they are capable of.
Are we making an assumption here that all prisoners are capable of (and perhaps even more likely) of doing harm? Is this fair?
Not all prisoners want to or have caused harm it is that a majority have and it may be dangerous for them to lead a whole Country.
26 Sep 2020
No! I think it should be the other way round, they can vote but no run for President or Prime Minster. I don't think that is fair because if you where a criminal and just can out of prison and you won the election for President or Prime Minster you could harm the country. You could do that by putting people in danger because you have just been in prison for doing something wrong and the you cold do something wrong to the country. But they should be able to vote because everyone needs a say and let the voices be heard.

I don't really think this is fair because its a way much bigger responsibility to become a president than voting who you want to be president
29 Sep 2020
It is not fair that prisoners can vote because they could vote for the wrong president. That could let them free and do what they want and can't go back to prison again but I doubt a president will do that though.

I don't think it is not fair because teenagers like under 18 can't be president but people from prison can
30 Sep 2020
Why can they become president when they are in prison
02 Oct 2020
I don't think it is fair because if a criminal became a candidate then won the election they will become president and possibly while there in that place they may commit another person crime and since presidents can't be arrested ( at least for a while) they may not even be punished and can keep their place as president.

I don't think it is fair .

I believe a prisoner or ex prisoner should be able to vote for who they think and believe will do good for america . But I believe they could be a president if they did something minor as they may of changed

If they did have voting in prison then if they did it for some people then the others would get jealous
