Burnet News Club LIVE 2017

11 January 2017

In early 2017, we staged three immersive theatre events for Burnet News Club members. Over 300 BNC members from schools in York and London came together to challenge their thinking on punishment and rehabilitation in prisons.

Using interviews with ex-offenders, prison guards, victims of crime and social workers, we created a new form of documentary theatre which used teaching, theatre and documentary techniques. The young people followed the story of Wesley, a prisoner who mugged a teenage girl. After interviewing each character involved in the case, club members decided whether to send Wesley back to his cell, or put him in a rehabilitation programme.

We are really grateful to York Theatre Royal and Pleasance Theatre for offering us their venues. Both theatres have been incredibly generous with their time and space.

“[It’s] a great opportunity to develop critical thinking skills and be subjected to a wide variety of opinions.”
