Weekly Competition #1

Openmindedness for competitions

WINNERS ANNOUNCED:
patient_truth and allowing_huckleberry

Well done to everyone who entered this week and took the time to explain their reasons for their decisions. We loved the answer from allowing_huckleberry who used excellent reasoning to explain how power linked two of the pictures. There was excellent open-mindedness and an original perspective from patient_truth. Well done!

WEEKLY COMPETITION #3:
Odd-One-Out

This week's competition requires Open-Mindedness and Reasoning.

Look at pictures A, B and C above. Which one do you think is the odd one out?

The very best answers to 'Odd-one-out' find similarities between two that the other one doesn't have.

Remember, the answer could be A, B or C - there is no right or wrong answer! We are looking for creative and imaginative ways of looking at these three images. Go beyond the obvious and try and think of a reason that no one else has thought of.

Make sure you explain your answer with good reasons and keep an open-mind. There may not be a 'right' answer here so we want you to look closely or creatively, and give reasons for your choice.

Winners will be announced next Friday 27th September. Good luck!

I think that picture B is the odd one out this is because picture A represents the freedom of speech that Hong Kong gets but then picture C represents the democracy that Hong Kong should get but was took away by china as they interfered with the 2016 election the reason why i think B is the odd one out is because the freedom of the press has not been took away.

Personally, I think that picture C is the odd picture out. I know because in picture A there are many civilians watching you, some having cameras. The cameras may take pictures and be sent away to other people. Also, you may be vexed about if you made a good impression of yourself. Therefore, they are expecting you to be perfect when not all that glitters is gold, they don't feel sympathy for you. But, you might be a confident person, a different story lays in a different path...
In picture B, there MAY not be many citizens in person, but you don't know who will see you behind the screen... I would also like to point out that there is a man ordering the model or person to one direction or the other. This may seem that they are doing a photoshoot or something that relates to needing a beautiful or handsome person. They don't really want you for who you are, just for your appearance.
I chose picture C because people are cheering, and it's at you. You seem happy, they seem joyful and accept that you may have made but that's ok. they accept you for who YOU are. However, will pay attention and that's part of the way people act. The best strategy is to ignore it, and carry on.

    Thank you for reading.

In my opinion, Picture C is the odd one out.
The picture appears to be showing a discussion or vote. The person standing on the stage/podium appears to be addressing an idea, or questioning somebody else's opinion. The audience is either waiting to ask questions, or voting on an issue.
I have tried to reason my opinion as much as I can so it makes it easier to understand.

I think that picture B is the odd one out as, in my opinion, shows how armed police or armed government officers are getting ready to attack or ambush the people of Hong Kong as they are not having a say. Furthermore, the other photos/images are ahoing hands up or a microphone. If you think deeply into this the people who put their hands up want to have a say and the person who is going to speak on the microphone is going to speak about something and have a say

I think Picture C is the odd one out, since it is the only picture that is most likely not to have the Press involved.
I believe this, because Picture A looks like a gathering of something important with many people attending (the crowd behind the microphone), and Picture B clearly has a man with a camera, and a sort of top that says "PRESS" on it. However, there is no reason that I can find that says that Picture C should have press present. It simply looks like a staff meeting, or an open day for schools.
Furthermore, Picture B looks something to do with the army, or a war – something along those lines – because of the uniform; something press or newspaper-worthy. Picture A seems to look a bit like a festival, or somewhere that would get quite a lot of media attention because of all the people present. With Picture C, however, it looks more like something at work, because of the people with suits.

I think picture b is the odd one out because, picture c is like a conference and picture a is like some one is a bout to give a speech whereas, picture b is just a bout war and has nothing to do with a microphone or some one holding the conference. However, the conference could be about what they should do to help the people in war and some one could d give a speech about it, so in a way they are all link.

I think picture B is the odd one out because journalism has many different ways of collecting or making news for the public. The first and last pictures show peaceful environments, such as a music festival and a conference, whereas picture B is more like a war zone and a dangerous place. When you look at Picture B, you can see that he is wearing some sort of bullet-proof vest and helmet. Sometimes journalists go to dangerous places for the sake of the news and reporting the current affairs to the public. They put their lives in danger to be able to do their job best. I would know, since my mum is one.

B is the odd one out.
In the other two images a person is delivering news and people are listening. B is the only one that is there in that moment watching and taking photos of what is happening. They are more in the front, in this dangerous place. The other photos may not have seen or experienced what is happening but know enough to share their opinion.
In either picture A or C they are sharing their knowledge with the people. Talking to them face to face and not from behind a camera. The people in A and C are able to do this and is able to share what the people need to know due to the things that people like the person in picture B is doing. Picture B is the only one not sharing anything towards a crowd but gettign the information for others.

    23 Sep 2019

I think that picture C is the odd one out since it seems less powerful. C seems to be the most calm out of them all.

The reason I believe B is presenting the theme of power is due to the presence of guns. The presence of a gun could suggest any level of power even if no one is using it to purposely harm others. As well as that, it is shown that the people in the picture are people of the press, most likely researching for a news story/article etc.

Also, the reason I believe picture A presents power is due to the same amount of harm it can cause as picture B. Being a spokesperson or someone able to speak with their region or country freely as an occupation can cause as much harm as guns. It may not be physical but it still can affect the economy, environment and jobs.

The reason i believe this is because although they are all related in some kind of way, it seems as though A and C are more linked to one another. Since there is a microphone, with an audience behind it, in the first one and what appears to be a press conference on-going, with an audience in the third one, it feels like almost the same thing. For me, picture B is the odd one out. Picture A conveys the idea that anybody can be given a platform to speak out their thoughts, ideas, and emotion to address to any audience and even to those that may disagree with what you have to say. Similarly, picture C shows that the audience also have the freedom to speak out and discuss or reply back to what a speaker has to say. So both these scenarios present a 2 way conversation, an exchange of ideas, open dialogue in an open space and many viewpoints being heard.

However, picture B represents the press and how they can sometimes present one viewpoint, for example, in picture C, they can take just one snapshot of an event and use it to convey whatever message they want to tell us. The danger is, fake news and propagandas can spread easily through this way. This is very much the case in China where there is no freedom of the press, it’s just a one way communication of one thought. When a person gets their news from just one media source, there is a danger of not knowing what else you are missing, you may be reading or hearing news that is not true. In a democratic society, we have the freedom to read whatever we wish to read, however in China, Google is banned in order to control access to uncensored, free information that we take for granted. The government of China controls every aspect of the media and lots of false information is fed to it’s people. Picture A and C represent what Hong Kong people are fighting for and are afraid to lose.

In picture A, for instance it doesn't really have a person speaking but it still has people in the background. But C has a person speaking but there is still people in the background

To be honest, I don't really know ; I might think C could be the odd one out since the fact that Hong Kong has no democracy , there wouldn't be people voting (putting their hands up.)
Thanks for reading my comment 👍

In my opinion, I think that picture in the middle because that is about taking pictures and the first on is about someone saying something and the last one is someone who is making a speech and the middle one is not making a speech.

I think that C is the odd one out because A and B show one person sharing events with the rest of the people. in picture C it is a hall full of people all agreeing on the same topic. In picture B it is one person taking photos for the citizens to see and picture A is one person talking at a group of people and not giving them a say.

I think picture B is the odd one out because B doesn't show anything to do with a speech whereas picture a and C does In picture A it shows a microphone with a audience behind it and with picture C it shows a man speaking in front of some people like a speech, so they both seem similar and related to each other. And picture B shows no people speaking or no audience and it just shows people in the army with guns and someone filming or taking a picture. Also the others shows an someone announcing something but the picture B isn't announcing much.

I believe B is the odd one out because showing a microphone means that we say a speech. Linking to the hong Kong crisis there is lots of politics arguments so maybe a speech was to sort the matter or try to solve it at least.I think C links to A because people are doing debates/speeches.

My personal opinion is that picture A is the odd one out,
as not many people are taking to the streets to peaceful protest, most of them are resorting to violence to get their point across.
B shows the truth, this is what is happening, the press and the army?armed police are being needed to use force to restrain the violent protesters. Also, C shows the truth, in China, leaders are debating how to settle the problem in Hong Kong.

Personally, I think picture B is the one out.
Both A and C show something that represents democracy, ar a peaceful speech of some sort, whereas B shows people in the army holding guns, with someone from the press in a helmet and protective jacket, suggesting violence has or may be used.

I think that picture “B” is the odd one out because picture “A” shows that the citizens of Hong Kong Have their say and are listened to and also in picture “c” It shows that they are asked and offered to make changes and shows that the government are listening and understanding the public’s problems.

Picture A could be the odd one out because the microphone could represent many things whereas the other pictures clearly define other things. The background also looks slightly out of place as it look slightly like a sports match.

Picture B could be the odd one out because it looks like the only one that represents violence and the press.

Picture C could be the odd one out as it is the only one that looks formal and not unofficial.

I think that picture B is the odd one out, as it shows the army. I chose B because the other ones show the power of people to question things, for example picture A shows the power of the the people and the freedom of speech that people have. They may not be able to immediately affect the issue, but they are able to raise awareness of the issue to other people and to explain their view. In C, it shows a parliament or congregation where people are asking questions and questioning the opinion of another person. However B does not show this as it has the military and it can be said that there is no questioning the military as they are usually controlled by the government. This can be a corrupt government or puppet government, for example in Hong Kong, where it being taken over by the Chinese government.

I believe that the odd picture out is picture C. This is because A and B seem to represent dangerous situations. I believe this because in the background of picture A it seems like a protest or an angry crowd behind the microphone. This could represent the situation in Hong Kong where the people are protesting and the authorities are trying to calm them down. It could also represent people persuading the citizens of Hong Kong to protest against the police officer.
In picture B, it represents the press going into a dangerous situation. In the photograph, you can see the journalist is wearing a bullet proof vest. This shows that they are going into a war zone or a dangerous area.
These are connected because they can both have angry people and both can be a result of an act by the government.

I believe picture A is the odd one out because i think the photographer of B and C were suppose to take picture of people taking a speech or doing something where they know their getting their picture taken , but they don't show it to make it look better , or they need information from the picture to remember.Or they want to show friends and family. whereas picture A i think the photographer just wanted to take a picture of the microphone but couldn't zoom in all the way to get the people out of the picture and got them in the photo. but i believe he edited the people and blurred the people just in case it effects them getting their picture taken when they don't want it taken . this is an act of kindness for people he doesn't know! At least he or she did the right thing ; ]

of people and it represents the freedom of Hong Kong speech
and picture C has a huge crowd like picture A and are ready to

B is the odd one out is because the freedom of the press has
    not been took away!

Actually when you think about it all of them can be different to each other in their own way . A can be the odd one out because on picture C it shows cooperation to come to a decision and on picture B both men are working together to take some sort of picture so on A it is the only one that shows one micerophone and one voice .However, picture B can be the odd one out because it is the only picture with a weapon . Also picture C can be the odd one out because it is the only picture that shows a democracy .

I think that picture B is the odd one out due to the fact that picture A is showing the freedom of speech Hong Kong gets where as picture B shows more about the war and leading up to freedom. Picture C and A seem very similar as they are both images of a speech, this speech could be about freedom, democracy or change in laws, where as picture B is an image of a photographer with army men, this could be showing how Hong Kong are fighting for their rights instead of speaking out for them like in picture A and C. I think A and C are the same/ similar pictures as they are showing that Hong Kong just want piece but need to take it to these violent extremes as no one is listening. China know what they want and are trying to make it happen but they need to know that they have a contract that is NOT out of date yet as it still has 38 years to go, stating that Hong Kong still have 38 years of freedom and peace from the Chinese laws. At the same time i also think A is the odd one out as it is not government lead. B shows the army which could be the Chinese army trying to fight back to the rioters of Hong Kong and C shows a debate of some sort which could possibly be lead by the government to help decide what laws should be put into place.

I think picture B is the odd one out because it looks like someone is fighting for something unlike A and C where it seems to show you a picture of a meeting or a vote.Picture B seems to be a picture about army or force where people take what they want without being open-minded.Where in picture C the lady on the stage looks like a important person or an mp.It looks like they are asking a question to the crowed and wondering on peoples opinions.Picture A looks like i/the person looking at the picture, is in front of a big crowed it makes me feel like i'm making a speech. So my final conclusion is that picture B is the odd one out
