#11 - Winners Announced!
Wow! What a response to this week's competition. A record number of entries for this year. Thank you to everyone who took part.
Stars were awarded where mottos were original, thoughtful and reflected the goals and ethos of NASA (and backed with a developed reason for your choice).
Our Primary winner is unbiased_lute of Evelyn Street Primary. Their motto: "Still leading, still launching." is a brilliant reminder of the ongoing work of NASA and unbiased_lute explained why they chose these words in particular to reflect NASA's values. Read their reason - it's highlighted orange in the comments!
Our Secondary winner is resilient_accordion of Ormiston Bushfield Acdemy, for "Unbounded exploration." A great example of how so much can be communicated in such a short space. They also explained the effect they thought these words would have.
What's a motto?
You might have heard of the word 'motto' before. It's a phrase which sums up the beliefs or values of something, usually an organisation. Does your school have a motto? It's usually written on the school badge, or somewhere big in the entrance! People can have their own mottos too - to describe how they live their life. You might have heard the phrase "That's my motto!"
NASA, the organisation in charge of American space exploration, used to have a motto:
'For the benefit of all' according to a space engineer who used to work there.
HOWEVER, it has not officially updated it's motto for many years.
This week's challenge is to make a motto for NASA and explain why you have chosen it.
Your motto needs to be a phrase which describes a thirst for discovery and a commitment to space exploration. What will really make your entry stand out is the reasons you give - we are looking at these JUST AS MUCH as the mottos themselves!

A bit more about NASA.
- NASA was the first organisation to land people on the moon in 1969
- Before this, their Mercury missions explored whether people could survive in space, and then their Gemini missions involved people doing hands-on work in space and on spacecrafts.
- NASA is also known for working on the International Space Station and the Hubble Telescope, which was put into Earth's orbit in 1990.

NASA: The Universe at Your Fingertip
Reason: I would suggest this motto because you can donate to NASA, learn more from their website and potentially work there. NASA helps the people on Earth understand about Space and its vast array of problems. The Universe is everything we can touch, feel, sense, measure and detect. It consists of living things, planets, stars, galaxies, dust clouds, light, and even time. Before the birth of the Universe, time, space and matter did not exist. The space between the stars and galaxies is largely empty vacuum.
The reason I have chosen to make this motto is because it shows that we can explore space with our imagination, we don’t need to be there. Another example would be if I were to say the world would never make it to space, people might try their hardest and make it to space. As our technology grows, our minds will make us do crazy things and even one day we might make hover cars that can go into space! This shows we can do anything...

I have chosen this motto because many of the leading scientists in the world and NASA have come from poorer families. I know this because I have been sceptical and researched about this point. My motto would be 'new space exploration opportunities are like a light year, constantly expanding' because light years are very long so I would use a simile to state that there is an opportunity of other things to explore in space. Who know what could be lurking in the inexplicable shadows of space!
space is our place
I would choose: NASA bringing the universe to your hands, because it shows that NASA are trying to discover new things about our universe, which they are.
My motto is... "The world is in our hands."
The reason why I said this is because even though the world, also including space, is not in our hands literally, we must do what we can to maintain it. Another thing is, that I also think space is a world on it's own. If we continue nurturing space, it will be such an accomplishment that it WILL feel as if the world was in our hands. It will also, I think, teach us to be irrepressible, meaning that you are resilient. It's not as if taking care of space is easy by using magic or something, it takes time.

Reason: I have chosen this motto because as engaging_physics said, we can explore Space in our heads and imagine it. Space is something you can imagine, think about and learn. You can think anything in; and as the name suggests, there is Space!

I think this should be NASA's motto as it captures their self-belief to reach astonishing heights, and also that it shows that they share their spine-tinglingly awesome discoveries! I hope NASA takes my motto into consideration!!!!!!!!!!
My motto would be:
'Reach for the moon, and even if you miss you'll land among the stars'. I chose this because it basically means that, when you try your hardest you can do anything, and even if you don't achieve what you want to achieve you will still land some where great because of how well you tried. You could also look at it saying that, if you try your hardest and you don't get what you want you will still be rewarded for how well you tried.

My Motto for NASA is : ''The space age starts now''.I have chosen this because from my learning,it seems from this year and onwards that there will be alot of space related stuff going on around this year.Apparently,Space tourism is sopost to be happening around 2019-2023,however im not completely sure.I also think that Trump's Space force is sopost to be happening very soon.This is why i chose my motto.

My reason is: That over the last decades NASA has been finding more about space and many people are learning about it, the things they didn’t learn in their years of primary school, secondary school, coledge and university.

My motto for NASA would be: Space. The World’s new era. Reason: I have chosen this motto because currently Space Exploration is a huge factor of the world’s industry. After reading a few of my fellow Economists points of view, I have seen that many people have spoken about reaching the stars. I am sceptical about this as our aim is to make new discoveries and learn more about Space. One thing I do agree with a lot of people is that the space era is now beginning. We may have landed on the moon 50 years ago but now is the time we are actually going to make useful, proper discoveries that could change our view of space forever.

NASA: Space is not the final frontier. The reasoning behind my motto is that space is no longer the boundary for mankind due to advances in technology and new discoveries.
"With belief and determination, anything is possible." I would choose this because space exploration is quite simple and straight-forward if you can believe in yourself and trust your co-workers. I also said anything is possible because space travel and exploration is so incredible and unbelievable that it feels like everything or anything and even more so when we go to Mars.

NASA: The Future of Space Exploration Is In Safe Hands
I have chosen this motto because I believe that NASA’s involvement in space exploration is essential if we want it to progress. When you think about space, it’s hard not to think about NASA. They have been involved in the majority of major space discoveries since they first formed in 1958 and it difficult to image space exploration progressing further without NASA being somehow involved. For NASA< space exploration is the priority and so, despite politicians and world leaders perhaps not always having it at the forefront of their minds, we can at least rely on NASA to keep pushing this forward.
NASA: the human race in space
NASA: Pushing Boundaries Since 1958
I chose this motto because NASA formed as an organisation in 2958 and since then they have continued to push boundaries with cutting edge aeronautics research that has dramatically changed and simplified our ability to explore space. For example, they used the Hubble Space Telescope to change our understanding of the universe around us. It was also their early work on communication and weather satellites that has changed our daily lives. I strongly believe that NASA will continue to push boundaries to discover things we haven’t even considered yet.

Reason: The reason why I chose it is because there are things to explore in space and there are lots of things to see/investigate in Earth and might be other things to explore too.Also, there might be new creations/ stuff.

NASA: 61 Years Of Success
I have chosen this motto because NASA was founded in 1958, which means it has been around for 61 years. During that time, it has had many successes: its Space Shuttle Program, which ran from 2072 to 2011; Apollo 11, which put the first man on the moon; New Horizons, which was the first spacecraft to explore Pluto up close; and Cassini, which is known for discoveries such as finding jets of water erupting from Enceladus (a moon orbiting Saturn) and tracking down a few new moons for Saturn. Although NASA has had some failures, it is their successes that stand out more and they keep coming back and improving on their mistakes.

You would never imagine that these things would become a reality but, with NASAs hard work, they have become a possibility, if not now then in the not too distant future.
NASA: Creating Opportunities For The Next Generation
I chose this motto because NASA themselves say on their website that they are challenging themselves to reach new heights and reveal the unknown. By developing new systems and spacecraft and by making innovations in flight and technology, they want to create opportunities not only for a new generation of scientists, engineers and astronauts but for the ordinary people of the future. As I’ve learnt in this issues of BNC, space exploration so far has already led to so many discoveries and I am sure that there are many more to be made that will benefit future humans. In addition to this, there are possibilities of travel into space for holidays and even for human habitation on another planet. Without NASA, I doubt any of this would be possible. NASA are creating these opportunities and we are grateful to them.
NASA: To the Moon and Beyond
I chose this motto because NASA have already explored the moon (their Apollo 11 mission was the first of its kind and put the first men on the moon) and have discovered lots of information about other planets in our solar system, for example the Cassini mission discovered 7 new moons orbiting Saturn and the New Horizons Mission found that Pluto’s moons spin faster than other moons. NASA also has an Exoplanet Exploration Programme, which means that they are exploring planets outside our solar system. As part of this programme, they have found the first Earth-size planet orbiting a star in the "habitable zone" (the range of distance from a star where liquid water might pool on the surface of an orbiting planet). This could be a future home for humans! Due to NASA’s extensive exploration, this is why I have chosen this motto.

Reason: I chose this motto because NASA is all about space ind what is beyond the Earths crust is space. Another reason on why I chose this motto is because from what I know about NASA, I believe they study about the solar system but I'm not sure.

I used this because most of space hasn't been discovered.
My motto for NASA would be:step into space.My first reason is that NASA sent the first person to step on the moon(Neal Armstrong).My second reason is that NASA has sent many rockets and people into space so people have stepped on the moon.My final reason is that all the rockets that have been sent into space have also stepped on the moon when they have landed.
“ see more know more” I chose this because the more we explore space the more we will know about our own existence and other things. I think it would make a good motto because it is true and if you don’t witness things you won’t really know anything about it and since NASA is all about discovering space it would fit nicely.

'From the light of the stars, The blue of the Moons.' every 3 full moons, there is a moon called a blue moon. Also, stars are Blindingly bright and they have different temperatures. the colours show their temperature. Red is cold Blue is hot. Yellow or white is neutral.
Personally, I think that ‘Exploring the unknow’ is a befitting motto for NASA. I believe this because, NASA is a hugely influential contributor of widening our knowledge of the unknown.
Furthermore, the definition of motto is ‘a short sentence (or phrase) to show the beliefs or ideas of an individual,family or institution’. I think that the motto I identified follows these ‘guidelines’ and successfully portrays the basis of NASA.
In conclusion, NASA stands for National Aeronautics space administration and ‘Space’ is often referred to as being enormous and something that we generally lack much knowledge about. The link to the ‘unknown’ relates to NASA itself. In my opinion it identifies the ideas behind NASA which is ‘explore’ in a short yet effective and efficient way which also follows what motto actually defines as.
my motto is: trying is not what we do, doing it is what we achieve
I did this because I wanted to say that NASA does not try to reach for the stars, they do it. If some one wants to do something incredible they don't try to do it. They do it.
I think the motto is also quite powerful, giving a sense that NASA is powerful and can achieve. It is telling people that space travel can be and is a very powerful thing that can be done, no matter our doubts.
Motto: aim for the moon and that's where you will end up
Reason: I chose this motto as it is a metaphor, it can mean that if u work hard you will end up far in life; it can also be connected to space as Neil Armstrong was determined and brave enough to LAND ON THE MOON. Even if you think NASA is some sort of scam you can still change NASA in the future if you aim for the moon
My motto for NASA would be: 'Keep moving forward because there is no Space B.'
Reason: I chose this motto for NASA because if they just push their great opportunity to the side now, they won't get another chance. They would have to do all their hard work again and they wouldn't want to do that. Also, I chose this motto because there is no Space B to just explore after everyone has already explored Space A in the time that NASA were doing nothing. NASA is one of the most well-known space stations so they wouldn't want to give up on the world that's waiting there for them and let other countries do everything NASA wanted to do. They have to keep moving forward and soon enough, they will find themselves earning awards from monarchs, presidents e.t.c .
My motto would be: 'Solving Great Conundrums That Can Change The Universe'
Reason: I chose this motto because NASA have been known to prove theories wrong and right, and for finding things out that can affect life on Earth or in fact for the whole universe. NASA are a puzzle solving company that can help us have more knowledge about space. This is why I think that this is a good motto for NASA.

Translation.
Curiosities, deep in space. Great quests, deep in space. Our destiny, deep in space. Our assignment is to achieve greatness for the earth and our assignment is deep in space.

Nasa does not only launch rockets into space for reason at all, they solve great mysteries and see if we can inhabit other worlds (like mars) if we bust the earth. They also give us and them selfs more knowledge about space and things in/about space.

I chose this motto for NASA because by learning ore about the universe could rewrite something new to our world. There could me more that nobody doesn't know and NASA could show that soon there would be everything to know about the universe. There could be more to write in history or future of space.

Reason: Becuase NASA was first created to explore space which is considered ‘uncharted territory’ of which we previously new little about. It was created when the first satellite ‘Sputnik 1’ in 1957.’

I have chosen this motto because I want to show that it is possible that soon NASA can reach the highest limits in space.
'Yesterday we started...' I have wrote this because NASA was founded in 1958 (the past/yesterday), and between then and now, they have achieved some great things such as landing a man on the moon and working on the International Space Station.
'Today we explore...' This means that NASA have been exploring ever since the first moon landing and now.
'Tomorrow we go further than our dreams!...' means that in the future we will be able to go to new places in space. They set a target/dream and go beyond their dreams.
Motto: In the past we landed, in the present we travel through and in the future we will achieve.

The reason why I chose these words is that it's nationally healthy that different ethnicities work together. This would block the possibility of having another World War.
